Exporting a car - need info

A friend of mine is moving back home to Peru in a few months. She has a pretty nice '93 Sentra she'd like to take with her. Does anyone know about exporting vehicles, or a website that has this information? I guess the main stuff would be shipping info and import regulations for the destination.

Here the link to the US Customs website it may help you http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/impoexpo/impoexpo.htm then look about quarter of the way down the page and click on exporting a vehicle.

I am totally ignorant about dealing with Peru Customs Officials, and I do not wish to be an alarmist, but you may wish to consider Peru's import procedures, some of which are on the books, and some, perhaps, are not.

For instance, your friend may have a nice "little" Peru import duty to pay, not to mention a "gratuity" to get some greedy Peru Customs Official to complete the paperwork in an appropriate timeframe. And if she doesn't want to pay a bri-- I mean, a gratuity, it could take months to get her car across. Scope this out thoroughly. Once you've got the car as far as Peru Customs, it will get pretty costly in a hurry if you have to ship her car back to the U.S.! And those Peru Customs Officials, whose annual salaries would probably be declared poverty-level wages here in the U.S., know that...

One more thing to consider... I don't know what kind of cars the folks in Peru drive, but if nobody drives Sentras, she will be easily recognized as *someone with money*. Many folks in Peru do not have money to buy a car, much less import one from the U.S. She may wish to drive what the locals drive, rather than make herself a target for robbery, car-jacking, or even kidnapping...

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I've seen this dynamic at work before. It will pay to go slow on this one, Research carefully and completely.

Good luck.

(snip)
Good luck.
She's Peruvian, going home. I think she knows the situation better than most of us, which isn't to say she could still have problems ... I suggested she'd do better to sell the car and take cash back, but I guess the car is worth more there. Might wind up not being worth the trouble. That's my guess.

She may know what's best, but I tend to agree with you: I'd sell it here in the U.S. and eliminate a potential snarl of bureaucratic red tape. Even if the import proceeds very smoothly, administratively speaking, there is no guarantee the car won't arrive damaged or get stolen in port on either end. Again, good luck.

I'm sure you mean well, but Motorex imports cars from Japan. How would that help these folks export a car to Peru?

Contact a Freight Forwarder (look in yellow pages). They'll handle everything.

(don't confuse courier like UPS/FedEx/DHL with freight forwarder)
