EGT Guage Problems

I got in my car this morning and started it up and the EGT guage made a strange whining sound, and then jumped way below zero. I kept watching it all the way into work and it wasn't smooth like normal, but jumping all around, and it kept making that strange noise.

Any ideas? My control unit is under the hood, but its dry and the connections all look okay.

What made the whinning sound? You really should not have the control unit under the hood.

The guage itself.

Had no choice, the probes wires would not reach into the engine bay, so I put it all under the hood.

The control unit might be toast. Call autometer and get it warranty repair.

About $150-$350 depending on model (prices include probe)

You know all you have to do is ask your SE boys, they could tell ya. The previous post is correct somewhere between 150-350 depending on the brand and the size. I, and most other guys, have the Autometer gauges. They make different series, I'm running Phantom, but the gauge is the same as is the install.

Okay, get this.

Yesterday I finially got around to taking the guage out of the car to send it back to AutoMeter for replacement. Before doing so I decided to hook it back up and voila, it worked.

Any ideas what they hell was going on with it? I didn't change a thing.

Didn't change that. Just re-attached the power wire.

Its working now, that's all I'm worried about. I'm guessing it was an electrical bug, but I can't figure it out for the life of me.

That's exactly what I would guess, ground. If not the ground, then the gauge may have something loose inside and with the moving it around it made clean contact again. Doubtful though. You may have to call Ghostbusters next time.
