Polarized License Plate Cover / Extra Large Bumper
Sorry for posting here if not the appropriate forum. I tried to post in the all United States general forum, but there doesn't seem to be one!
I'm looking for a license plate cover that causes the lettering on the plate to "disappear" at high/overhead angles. The one I have seen is yellowish in color and bubbles out in a rectangular manner. Anyone know of a vendor, perferably online? (I have used the clear one with the mirroring effect, but it does not do the job.)
Also, I would like to change my bumber with one that has the the license plate area deeply indented. Have any of you accomplished this without buying a complete kit, and within a tight budget?
Thanks!

I live in Hawaii and just recently they started selling the type of license plate covers that you are looking for. Not sure how well you keep up with the news, but Hawaii started using unmarked vans that sit on the side of the highway and they have this camera operator who sits in the back and uses laser to record your speed. If you are even going one mile over the speed limit, it will take a picture of your license plate and you will receive a ticket in the mail. Well, a very big uproar was created over this, and the vans have all but gone away, at least while the courts are hearing it out. So, some manufacture made clear license plate covers that when looked at straight on or even at an angle, it makes the letters on your plate all but disappear. Pretty resonable price as well. Around $40 or so. If you would like more info, send me a pm. Hope this helps.

The plate cover is called the "protector" or the super protector" They're sold all over the place. I'm also from Hawaii, and those damn vans are causing all kinds of problems. The covers are made of 3 pieces of plastic, the plastic is cut in such a way that if you look at the plate from any angle past 30 degrees, you can't see the plate number. Yep, it's very illegal, but here in Hawaii a $55 fix it ticket is cheaper than a speeding ticket for going 5 miles per hour over the speed limit, and it doesn't affect your insurance rates. If you're interested go to google.com and enter "anti-radar" this should take you where you need to go.

This is a link for the covers: http://coolautoparts.com/antiradar.htm
They have 4 versions, one for side radar photos, one for overhead, one for both, and one laser deflector. If you read this before I edited it, the new URL has better prices ... The same thing is at http://www.ontrackcorp.com/ They say they are the manufacturer, so I guess the first link is a reseller.
Here in California, I think they mostly use the overhead cameras on light poles. You'd need 2, because some are set up so that they get a picture of both the front license and the driver to prove who was behind the wheel. Maybe the side one would work better on the back, so witnesses couldn't get you on those fast getaways
The laser deflector theoretically works because they aim at the license, being a flat reflective surface. On the Maxima, that's the whole back of the trunk, so I don't think that would help with our vehicles.

I kept looking through Google and found a site (seems mostly to be down) for a wax from "Radiant Labs" that they claim deflects radar. Might try calling (847)879-7740 ... this is something funny I picked up on Yahoo, from some Brits talking about using this product, and another way to take out the radar camera ....

>on the Gatzo's...appears to be see through ... can't pick up a >thing!!

>I think the kid's around us have got it sorted - empty baked bean >can on a piece of string swung around infront of the camera!!! They >say they can empty the film in less than ten minutes...honest >guv... :-)

My origional intent was for www.407etr.com , but photo-radar use is relevant. BTW, those reading in Canada, stuff from www.ontrackcorp.com or their resellers do NOT work...I already tried!

Save your money!
This link is for a test of a number of different radar deflectors, both passive and active. http://www.escortstore.com/jammer.htm
There actually was one that worked great, but it was banned by the FTC around 1993. The plate covers we are reading about apparently only work around 45º, more than the angle typically used by cameras. Read for yourself. Of course, if they are working for people, maybe they've improved. The Photo Fog might help because it works against camera flash, if that's used. Hmm ... might be worth the $3 for a small bottle, just in case ...
