300ZX Calipers with 12.5" 3000GT Rotors
300ZX Calipers with 12.5" 3000GT Rotors
A little while back, Ginn Motorsports posted a thread on the Parts For Sale forum advertising a 12.5" rotor upgrade for those with the 300ZX calipers. Since I occasionally track the car, and was in the market for a big brake upgrade, I volunteered to be the guinea pig.
The brake kit fit without a hitch, the only modifications necessary being a different caliper bolt and shaving 3mm from the radius of the rotor. Wheel spacers were not necessary for my application, though they in all likelihood will be for most others. Surprisingly enough, the control arms did not have to be grinded down, which is a common 5th Gen solution to prevent rotor contact while turning.
Total parts came out to roughly $700 shipped to my door. This includes everything sans the steel braided brake lines, which I already possessed.
As for performance, initial impressions are that they are definitely superior to the stock braking system. Initial bite, overall distance, and resistance to fade have all improved noticeably. The only downside is the increased pedal travel, which is common to big brake upgrades. However, in my opinion, this is actually preferred, as it allows for additional feel.
I'll be posting a more detailed follow up after the 18th of April, during which I'll be visiting Willow Springs. At that time, I'll have a more accurate measurement of braking performance, as I've been there several times with the stock braking system, and have a relatively good idea of the prior braking points used.
If anyone is willing to post a few pictures for me, I'll go ahead and e-mail them over.

Was this on a 4th gen you did this or a 5th? Send me the pictures and I will host them for you. SuDZ@tromastyle.com

SuDZ ... we can keep them both up... I've got plenty webspace available. It's all good.
Hey TurboMax, I have a set of front rotors from a 93' 3000GT VR4 in good condiition. They sure as hell don't look like what is on that 5th generation max though. They look almost like cross-drilled rotors, but they are drilled all the way through, looks like just drilled indents into the rotor. Either way I'll sell you my rotors if you're interested. I'm in PA.
Turbo95Max: Matthel, all that you would need to purchase are the brackets and the rotors. The installation is fairly straightforward. Regarding cost, I'll let Ginn answer that question since I am not certain if he has set a definite price for the Maxima community.
SuDZ: 5th Gen, though you probably know that by now.
Chunger & SuDZ: Thank you both for hosting the pictures. Lol, I did not realize that you would post them at the same time.
My error, since I was worried Chunger had bandwidth issues from his e-mail response.
Colonel: The kit comes with the brackets, rotors, and brake pads. If you prefer, each piece can be ordered individually, if you already have the rotors and/or brake pads.
Chen127: Correct, they are dimpled rotors. The kit originally comes with cross-drilled/slotted rotors, but I had worries that they would be more prone to cracking. As such, I substituted the rotors for these alternate versions. I'd have preferred slotted, but those are the only two options he carries.

I will sell the kit for $450 + shipping.
It includes:
All hardware
2 dimpled and/or slotted rotors
Front Metal masters pads
What else do you need?
2 front 300zx calipers from a 90-96 300zxTT or from a 91-96 Non-turbo. These are 30mm calipers, the calipers from a 90 non-turbo are not as wide and WILL NOT FIT. Iron or aluminum is your decision, they both work.
I get my used parts from zxparts@mindspring.com, tell Russel that chip @ ginnmotorsports sent you.

Sounds like a nice setup. I'd be interested to see how this compares to the big brake kits since the price is definitely right. Too bad I already did my brake upgrade for a while :P

thanks for the reply guys
couple more questions
Can i order juss the hardware and brackets? i can get rotors and pads on my own. Will these fit 4th gen? i think the pics were on a 5th gen and i know 4th and 5th gen have different size caliper bolts. if you would sell me juss hardware and brackets i would be interested in picking up 2-4 sets. Thank you. Very interested!

on a side note, it looks like the 3000gt rotors just barely fit under non turbo Z rims .
so wat are the odds that this kit, adapted to the max, will fit on a 4th gen under na Z rims ??? i'm betting none, i hope im wrong tho. any other opinions???
edit: n/m ... they fit under Z rims w/ 15mm spacers ... there goes that idea

Just what the doctor ordered
Maybe I misunderstood something... the only reason we need these brackets is to fix the caliper offset for the new rotors? If we use the smaller 300ZX rotors there is no need to buy the brakets at all? Do the slightly bigger 3000GT rotors make that big of a difference? Lastly, these brackets can be used on both 4th and 5th gen maximas to attach the Z calipers to the 3000GT rotors? Will the adaptors work if we want to upgrade to the Skyline Calipers? If so I am ready to buy!!

psu max
you would have to put on 5mm spacers on the front wheels anyway to make the z rims fit, so maybe 15mm woulnd't be to much different. i am not sure but it may work, and it woudl be a lot cheaper than a skyline or wildwood upgrade.
Clarifying...
I am assumming that the only reason that we would need these new brackets would be if we are going to use the 3000GT rotors? Is this correct? The reason that I ask is because I have always heard that the 300ZX Calipers will bolt onto a 4th gen with no adjustment to the brakets. You just have to shave the rotors a bit.

How are these calipers going to connect to the stock brake lines? Does your kit include the brake line also? The stock maxima caliper is a banjo bolt set up, on the 300ZX caliper it's a male/female threaded set up.
You will need the existing 300zx setup: calipers and lines. Whatever lines you are using for the 300zx calipers.
This was designed to work on a 300zx, I am not familiar with the Maxima brake line setup, but whatever you guys have been doing to use stock 300zx brakes is what you need.

few more...
Are the rotors that you sell already trimmed to the correct overall diameter that we need, that is I am assuming 12.5 inches??? Also, is there anyway to order them truly crossdrilled? If not, is there someone who can crossdrill them for me? I am ready to order the brackets, but would like to be able to talk to someone first.
My rotors are not sized correctly for the Maxima, I am working with my supplier on having them trimmed. My supplier does not drill anymore, I weakens the rotor, since the holes are not cast into the rotor, but drilled.
Call me and leave a message.

You should be able to use the stock brake lines. When I did my conversion 2 years ago, I got SS lines for a Maxima, and when we test fit, it works perfectly. Then I had a line blow out, and it was temporarily replaced with a stock Maxima brake line which worked perfectly also.
