Located the #1 sleeper...

Well I have found the #1 sleeper out there, theres a guy about 25 mins away from me in my old town that started pulling on me which I thought was weird. I talked to him afterwards, and turns out his 95 max which is also auto is supercharged! He has stock height, stock wheels, not one sticker or anything on his car and not even clear corners, the funny thing is thats all he has except for a y pipe and b pipe but stock muffler...just thought I would share

yup theres some old dude down the street from me with a VR4...has no idea what he's got!!! I love that car, I wish they'd have continued to make it during the '95-99 2.0 turbo days...I would have loved to see a '99-00 Galant VR4!

Grand Am slammer

A buddy of mine knew this wiz mechanic. The guy took an old '88 Grand Am, and loaded it with a 442. The rest of the car was nothing to speak of, pockmarked with bondo. My friend bought it anyway for 1 grand, just for the helluvit. Well, he would go up to a strip of Rt. 8 (in lower Connecticut) back when it was first being paved and join the races up there. He'd completely blow away suped up American muscle cars, left and right. With that light body and huge engine, no one could touch him.

Thankfully for his sake, there weren't many curves in the road. It definitely didn't handle well!! But talk about a sleeper...

as far as I know the GTZ is only available in an automatic and has an N/A V6 200hp engine(same as 2k+ Eclipse)...all in all, a high 15's low 16's car! its NO WAY near the or has the potential of old Galant VR-4!

Picture this: A 1983 Volvo 240 diesel which has been converted over to a supercharged 5.0 Ford. They exist, believe it or not. If that's not a sleeper, I don't know what is.

Believe it or not, there is a strong community of Volvo/Mopar enthusiasts. I used to own a Volvo and stumbled upon a member one time. A crazy group of guys that just have this burning desire to make these boxy looking vehicles into major sleepers. I can imagine the looks on those IROC-Z drivers being smoked by a boxy family sedan. But I didn't know anyone had tried putting in a 5.0 Ford engine. That must've been quite a kick!

VR4 is very much alive

A usually-ignored fact is that Mitsubishi still makes the VR4 Galant. They just don't bring it into the US. US had a taste of it for a few years beginning 1991 as a limited release, but I have no idea why Mistu decided not to continue with it. You can still get the Galant/Legnum (hatchback) in other markets that have the performance edge.

VR4s are turbocharged, AWD vs the US-spec GTZ which is neither. Engines are different too.

Some pics from Mitsu-Japan's website
Japan-made VR4

More pics - interior is non-VR4

Spec Comparison - scroll down - It's after the summary

I was really into the VR4 but because it wasn't going to be brought to the US anytime soon, I moved on and got my sweet Max

snookered too

I was driving home late one night in a Mitsu Starion. Not a super fast car, but no slouch. I came up to a light and stopped. A rusty old bondo beater MGB pulled up to the left of me and stopped as well. I was getting kind of droopy because it was about 2 am, so I didn't pay much attention.

Just after the light, the lane I was in merged left into the lane he was in, so I just figured I would poke it a little once the light turned green and squeeze in front of him. Heck, I was only about 1/4 mile from home anyway, so...

Well, I goose it coming off the light, safety check my mirror to make sure I had gotten enough in front of him, and..., whut the..., this guy is STILL RIGHT NEXT TO ME. He had ab-so-lutely no business being there. Surprised the cr*p outta me. So, I braked and pulled in behind him and, in true 2am fashion, began to try to figure out what just happened.

Now, needless to say, I was a little more than curious about what was going on here. While it was indeed late, I knew the laws of physics hadn't been rescinded, there was just no way an MGB, especially *THAT* MGB, was going to keep up with my Star.

So, at the next light, where I would have turned right to head home, I stop, he stops, we look at each other (I'm still clueless at this point), and I can tell we're going to go when the light turns.

The light turns, I poke it pretty good, get on the turbo, get on the cam, figure I've smoked hi-, whut the..., HE'S STILL RIGHT NEXT TO ME AGAIN. I look over (we're doing about 70 at this point and both pulling hard, nobody else around), he tosses a knowing cheshire cat grin my way, I hear him downshift, he lights the tires and just leaves me in a big way. Probably pulls 10 car lengths on me in 2-3 seconds, smoke pouring off his rear tires, just gone.

Ever see the coyote's jaw when the roadrunner does that "beep-beep" thing and disappears? Well, to say I was aghast was an understatement. I had to look in the mirror to see if I had thrown an anchor out. I mean, a Starion wasn't that bad, was it? I just couldn't believe the two, big fat black stripes he laid as he left me in an acrid cloud of black fuel/tire smoke backwash. Obviously this guy did this just for the look on the other person's face, and on a regular basis too. If I could have seen myself, I'm sure it was priceless.

To make a long story short, we continued to play for another 5 miles or so, light after light, him just whupping me every time. Finally, after being thoroughly humbled, I caught up to him and frantically motioned for him to pull off into a nearby parking lot. I threw open the door and jumped out in an excited huff, I'm like, "Whut the f*** you got in that thing? NOS? SC? TURBO? A MILLION HAMSTERS?? WHHHAAAATTTTT!!!!" HOW COULD *THAT* THING POSSIBLY BE SO FRIGGIN FAST???

He just smiled that &#%@ grin again, hopped out, quietly lifted the hood and said, "V8".

um, yeah.

The owner of my speed shop just finished a little project of his own. A late 80's Volva wagon. It came out with a supercharged Chevy 350 small. Everything rebuilt from the groud up. Makes 700+ hp. Oh, and the car now has a full air ride suspension as well.

For more info on the Volvos...

Check out http://www.turbobricks.org/. I remembered seeing a snippet about the site in SCC a few years ago, and this thread reminded me of it.
