you guys are brave(top speed guys)...
today, my dad let me take the max to school again, well i was a bit early, so instead of taking the interstate, i took this back road to school(takes longer, but empty). well i decide to see how fast i can go(top speed), remember, no mods, all stock. when i got upto 80mph, i start hearing the wind noise, 90mph, noise got louder, 100mph, i'm sweating, 110mph, car feels like its floating, 115mph, approaching a hill, didn't want to "fly" over it and mess something up(like my pee brain), so i slow down, i was ready to crap my pants. i couldn't handle 115mph, but you guys that have gone 140mph+ are brave(and patient, took a while to get to 115). anyways, thats my story, had fun, great car, hope to get it back soon.
btw, got upto 100mph in my civic on that same road, took longer to get to 100mph in the civic than getting to 115mph on the max, but the civic was sooooo scary(didn't help that it was windy).

Going 115 on a back road will seem much faster than going 115 on a 3 lane highway which is where most people hit their top speed. I hit 120 on a highway once and the car felt so solid that the only thing I was worrying about was the

yea...its different onna 3 lane freeway at 4am...it feels safer..dosent feel as scary....so thats probably why you were gonna crap your pants...hahah..but 130+ it feels nice and stable Just take some baby steps untill you take your max..to the max!...remember... not in traffic!

Re: you guys are brave(top speed guys)...
First time I broke 100 was on I-5 in the early 70's, back when it was new and mostly deserted highway. I was in my grandfather's Olds Rocket 88 (a small car with a V8, not one of the later full sized ones), going from L.A. to Sacramento, and I had my mom with me! I hit 125 a couple of times (not topped out, either) while she was asleep, but I even did 100 with her awake too. She didn't mind because it was straight open road and nobody in sight. Can't do that there anymore. Too crowded ...
I've done 120 in the Maxima up 101 through Monterey County at 3am about 2 years ago ; a cruise, not just a short burst. Only worry is the cops can watch your headlights from 10 miles away ... that, and coyotes on the highway (the 4 legged kind). Hardly any trucks out there, either; I made it from Paso Robles to Richmond in just over 2 hours that night, even stopping for gas.

Do your topspeed runs on deserted freeways at early AM hours 3-5AM is best.
Top-speed runs on a secondary road where there's a chance of encountering ANY opposing-traffic or cross-traffic is just asking for trouble. You're covering alot of ground in a hurry once you hit triple digits; you can't rely on people to see you in time, or react to your rate of approach.
On secondary roads, you also usually have many immovable objects on the side of the road to contend with, like rocks, trees, walls, ditches, etc., any of which could cause you to have a very bad day if you lost control or had a blowout.
If you're gonna do it, don't risk anyone's life but your own. That starts with picking the right time & place. Personally, I hit 147 on a dark deserted hwy.

Don't worry your just used to the speed of your Civic. I know when I traded my 93 Civic years ago in on a 92 SHO it was like driving a rocketship. The SHO would haul some major @ss all the way up to 150mph. So when you finally step up to the Maxima take to the highway and then floor it. Then when your on the highway you won't feel that floaty feeling.

I still get scared to take it past 130. Everytime I hit 120 I start to back off. On a stock suspension, you'll get that floaty feeling. If you get a good suspension combo, it will go away. I have coilovers now, and while they give you the best control in the turns, I can't go that fast on the highway because they get to bouncy. Maybe its because the highways around here arent tha't straight, and when you do find a straight highway, the cops will be all over it.

Just use your head and don't get too much confidence once you hit top speed and get away with it. All ways keep up your gaurd no matter what kind of driver you are for your safety.
And, when you're not looking out for yours and others saftey, look ouf for the damn police. I got busted doing 121 on highway 74, got my car towed and not allowed to drive in Indiana anymore. Long long long and expensive story....

Yeah thats probably a little better. But i hope if you do run top side that you do it with a lot of caution, because more offten than not people like me who do it often get to comfortable with the speed which in turn makes you not quite as aware as you should be. So just do one thing every time you get in a car, Respect the Speed. Cause it can kill, biut aso

I hear ya about chillin' out. Everybody needs to do it once in a while when it comes to driving a 3000 + lb car at high speed!

anything much over 100 is just dangerous in a stock maxima. I took mine up to 130 when it was stock and it did not feel stable. now with wide tires and a very stiff suspension I can hit 140 and feel totally level and stable, even when cornering and hitting the brakes hard.

Speed kills. (yeah right, duh!)
Enough BS.
Two years ago I took mine up to 120+ chasing down a civic on an empty stretch of fwy. The car was stock at that time. The car felt stable.
The scarest moment would have been like 3 months ago when 2 cars raced down a 2-lane fwy and cut me off. The second guy showed me his finger after I honked at him for doing that. I was ****ed and tail-gated the car at 115+ for a mile. I almost wanted to put this guy out of his misery (like a cop does in a pursuit). *Disclaimer: It is a story. Don't try this at home.*

First time I broke 115 was on 9-11. Everyone thought that all the highways/freeways were closed so the streets were jammed. Luckily me and my friend with his gs300 saw a car on the Grand Central/Jacky rob and we decided to try it. When i was merging i looked in my rear view and NOT ONE CAR. I looked ahead and no cara so i just let it loose. I hit 117 then I got to the deadly part of the Jacky rob so i started to break. Wow was that fun.

115 in the stock max was way to scary. i've been taking that back road for weeks in my civic before trying to see how fast i can go, like i said, i got upto 100mph in my civic on a windy day, scary crap. i'm perfectly happy with driving at moderate speeds, no need to test top speeds anymore. be careful guys, even if you know what you are doing.
btw, the maxima was still VERY smooth at 115mph, just a bunch of wind noise.

Please, do yourself a favor: don't ever leave your house. You might hurt yourself.
Point:
Almost anything in life involves risk. Take the recent hockey-puck death as an example. Would that stop you from going to see sporting events? Probably not. Is a highway safer than a secondary road? Yes. Is it safer to do this at a time when there's traffic on the road, or no traffic? Ok, again, no-brainer. Follow me so far? My point was, even in pursuing seemingly dangerous activities, it is possible to minimize known risks.
Obviously no one would categorize going 147mph as a SAFE activity, even under the best of circumstances. That's implicit. But, I guess you chose to overlook that obvious point with your little Ralph Naderesque comment.
Again, it's only about minimizing "known" risks.
I would run @ night not only because I'm less likely to be sharing the road with other cars, but I'm better able to see them at a greater distance if they appear. Btw, there are overlit, straight freeways not far from me that render your point about overdriving the headlights moot. Under unlit night-driving conditions, I'd otherwise agree with you on that point. Anyway, take whatever risks you feel are acceptable to you as long as they don't endanger anyone else. Btw, I don't make a habit of this - only did it once.

I hit 158 racing my friend in a BMW. I was in a Lexus LS400. My friend who has a Maxima was in a car with me.. you should have seen his face when highway started rurning. It was the first time I was actually scared of speed. The car did not top out either. Gotta love the lux boat that has lower drag coefficient then Corvette and most other cars

3 years ago, after a road trip to Vegas, I AVERAGED (according to the trip computer) 105 mph over the final 120 miles between Great Falls and the Montana/Alberta border on I-15. That was before they slapped a speed limit back on Montana interstates I guess the good people of Montana didn't like out-of-staters using their highways as saltflats. That was in my Volvo 850turbo. Top speed of that car was 148mph. Can't wait to try out my max.
