How to ask for a Y-pipe

I am looking to get a y-pipe for my max. Now before you all respond with "use the search," I know about all the Group Deals going on, and countless threads on the matter.

What I want is for a local performance shop to build me one. Here's my question (don't laugh too hard!): What should I ask for?

Reason I ask, I call up the shops, and they quote me anything from $110-$2000 CDN, and tell me such things as they can build them in the shop in 45 minutes, to needing catalysts, ordered from Nissan.

So what's the deal? What do I *really* need? I'm thinking a large pipe shaped like a Y, which I've seen on several web sites. Not complicated!

Those who haven't gone for a GD from the big names, how did you ask for it? I doubt you had to go into the shop and show them a picture of one!

BTW, shops I'm visiting and calling aren't considered dinky or new, and have been around for a while, I think they're all suprised that its a Nissan wanting mods, and not a Honduh!

So 'fellas, what do I ask for to get me a Y-pipe?

Up until now, I didn't think getting a pipe was this complicated!

Thanks!

MaXXX

Oh, whats the consensus on aluminum vs. stainless steel? Thanks again!

Honeslty all you would need is the longer mandrel bent pipe from front collector and smaller from rear collector mated up SMOOTHLY and the correct size flanges added on all three ends...ask for the correct size bungs to be added for the 02 sensors and you will be in there. Good luck trying to have them fabricate a flex section though but they may be able to work out something. Best of luck...

Have them look at the stock one to start. After putting it up on a lift they should see the general size/shape. From there tell them what the above post said and its main function is to remove the precats (hope they dont panic) Once they see all that they should be set.

Why don't you just order one from Cattman, Stillen, Warpspeed or the others who sell them on this site.

They are proven products with many here who have used them. Makes no sense to get someone to fabricate something.

Just have them install it for you.

Depends on your budget. Some places can beat those prices and install it for you all in one.

I really doubt you can get a quality part fabricated from scratch for less than you can buy + install.

Well it depends my local shop bends there own piping etc. so that cuts down on that cost. Plus if you can get them to install it sometimes they give you a cheaper price anyway. But that depends on your place.

I myself got mine from Warpspeed so I dont really know what the local shops would charge.

My brother had a GOOD exhaust shop fab one from the existing Y plus adding some pipe. Pros: Was about $200 and fits excellent. Good gains, very low noise(due to them using the stock flex which now seems like an excellent decesion) Cons: Not coated in anyway(except for paint), used the stock flex/flanges. So output dia. on the Y is whatever the stock dia. was/is. He had to argue with them for a bit to get through the "why in the hell do you want a custom y?". When the saw the stock one...

Now because you have a 4th gen(precats) unless you are very cool w/ the shop, they most likey will NOT do a custom Y, unless you keep the precats there. (not really worth it then). It's very illegal to remove oem emissions equipment.

Now, given all the above, give Budget Exhaust a call.

Wow, look at Jeff catching me on missing the obvious...gee how hard is it to suggest reusing the stock flex...boy do I feel silly.

I belive in Canada they are usually called an F-Pipe, it does look more like an F than a Y. I would just go and buy one.

They go by lots of name F pipe, Ypipe, Downpipe. I think some even go by Hpipe, unless that is anotehr part all together. Might have to ask for them by a few names to get what you want across to them.
