Auto trans. takes multiple downshifts? Or thats what it feels like at least.

Ok so I never really noticed this before I got my duals becuase my car is loud now verses a very quite car a while ago. But now it is and has been apparent that my car sounds like it's playing a musical instrument my car downshifts soo much

Here is an example of what i'm talking about; As I pull out of my neighborhood onto the state road my tranny shifts into second like normal. The speed limit is 30 so I slow down around 38 . After I ease off the gas a little I hear and feel it bump down into gear. But then it bumps down, and then down again. Like, i'll accelerate to around 3k rpms, then it'll kick down to around 2k, then 1.6, then around 1.2k where I am at cruising speed.

Well, what is this? I don't understand the consept of multiple downshifts..I know it wont do this when I get the 5-speed becuase manuals allow single downshifts...right? This will make my exhaust sound alot different during shifting if that is the case..

That is easy to explain. What you are feeling is the 2-3, 3-4 + TC lock up. Your car should be in 3rd gear around 38-40mph at around 3k rpm then it shifts into 4th gear. In 4th gear the rpm drops to around 2000-2200 depending on throttle position, after you pass 45mph the TC locks up and rpm further drops to ~1500rpm @ 45mph.

Sort of (in a weird way) having an overdrive on top of the overdrive gear right?

I always wondered about that, at times i feel like i have 5 gears the way the auto shifts (per Craig's description)

Not to sound like a butt, but what you were describing were actually upshifts, not downshifts. Upshift = higher gear, lower RPM....downshift = lower gear, higher RPM

He's slowing down (albeit subtly described as slowing down to 38 in a 30mph road) and thus the transmission downshifts.

This doesnt make sense

If your transmission was downshifting than your rpm's would be rising instead of falling. i.e. If you are in 3rd and downshift to 2nd the rpm's will get closer to redline hence the louder noise coming from your exhaust when your tranny downshifts.

Not necessarily the case.

The torque converter locks in both 3rd and 4th gears. This could make the car feel like it has a total of 6 gears total.

I'm not sure about the 4th Gen's, but I know it does on the 5th Gen's for sure. You could hear it during one of Kev's dyno runs.

Mike, thanks for sticking up for me but I they are right. I had a typo. I ment I get up to about 38, start to ease off the throttle and feel it kick down, and down, and down again. I was still slightly on the throttle. I'm not familier with the downshifting/upshifting terms..

Anyways, 5-speed guys, I suspect that once I get my 5-speed implant the exhaust will sound alot different as i'm changing through the gears right? Like, it'll change tone only once each time I shift, and it'll be at it's deepest point (unlike the auto where it takes multiple upshifts before it settles into gear).

Am I right?

pretty much.

for example, let's say you're cruising in 5th on the highway and then drop it into third and floor it. your exhaust (and intake) will go from vrrrrrrrmmmmmmmm <shift> ROARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. heh. it will make you go

That is Exactly what i'm looking for....yes! Becuase right now if I ease off the gas sometimes the exhaust gets kinda high pitched, then it upshifts a couple times and settles into a very deep sound at around 1.3k rpms. I can't wait till I shift and it'll immediently go to 1.3k and then rise...I won't have to wait for the aggressive sound anymore
