very quick oil question

k, ive read from various threads that the top performing oil is redline something, and second to that would be amsoil (im not factoring in mobil 1 since its current formula will be no longer very soon); my question is, i have a 98 gle, with just under 70k miles, this is first oil change, what r the numbers i should use..like 5w or 10w or whatever, i think im gonna go with that redline stuff and if i cant find it amsoil
Thanks,
Tom

Redline if you want to squeeze every last bit of power out of it, Amsoil if you want better wear protection. They're both excellent oils, but Amsoil is formulated to last longer. See Bill's spreadsheet for more info on them.

Shoot me an e-mail and I'll price the Amsoil for you if you're interested.

They reformulated in order to increase profits. unfortunately, the new formula isn't as good as the old one was.

Lucky I bought a few cases when it was 2.99/qt at Target. Looks like I'll be moving to amsoil when it runs out. What a shame, seems Fram used to make a quality product back in the day...

Those numbers represent the oils viscosity, or thickness, at certain temperatures. The number before the W is the cold range, while the second number is indication of how thick the oil is when warm. The preferred oil in a Maxima is 5W-30, but 10W-30 is okay if you aare in an area with consistently warm/hot temperatures.

As far as I know, the Tri-Synthetic is the new formula, and has been out for a little while. If they are changing that formula again, I'm not aware of it. There may be some of the old stuff still in circulation in some places, but it should get harder and harder to find.

mobile 1?

Hmmm.. so does anybody know the new name of the new formulated (cheaper) mobile 1 oil? I went to my local car supply store to buy some oil and notice two kinds there. The one I usually bought since I first got my maxima about 8 months ago (Tri-Synthetic) and SuperSyn. Is SuperSyn the new, cheaper oil?

Mobil 1

The product spec data for Mobil 1 has changed again. I remember people in the forum indicating how the properties of the new formula were not up to the previous one, specifically Pour Point. I printed them out maybe two weeks ago. The current data shows the 0W-40 weight is now gone and the Pour point for the 5W-30 is back to it used to be (from -49 F to -65 F).
