60,000 Mile Service? ? ?

All:

It's time for the 60K service, and I want to ask your opinions on it. My dealer is selling the 60K service for $379. This includes:

LOF
Rotation
Inspect brakes
Timing & Idle
New Plugs
Fuel and air filters
Coolant drain and fill
Inspect and service battery

He is also selling this fatter package for $589 where they will clean the fuel system, actually flush and clean the coolant system, and add some oil additive or something. I don't know which I should go for. I'd like to get better gas mileage, and if cleaning the fuel system would do that, it would be good. Also I want to ensure the long, healthy life of my Maxima.

What do you think?

Thx!

B

Bring it to my house and I'll do it for $200 (including parts).

Kidding aside...you should be able to do this your self for under $100. Try it you'll like it.

Look at www.maximadriver.com under the how2 section.

I am not sure how though. I know I can change plugs, but. . . after that. . .As far as timing, and replacing fuel filters. . I dunno. .

379 really doesn't sound that bad. Dealers can be dishonest, but they do have to make money somewhere from honest work.

Even if you did it yourself
LOF ~$20
Rotation ~20 mins
Timing & Idle (does this mean belts?) If so this is definitely worth it
New Plugs ~$60+ (NGKs are expensive)
Fuel and air filters ~$10 plus time. If you have ABS this might take a while
Coolant drain and fill ~$10 and can be a pain from just a drain and fill. I had to drain and fill 3 times to clean out the old coolant.

That's at least $120 if you can get the parts at a good price. Personally I enjoy learning about my car, but it's usually the best when you can learn gradually rather than learning everything all at once. If you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself this isn't all that bad of a price from a dealer.

The timing and idle are set by the computer.

Do you have a maxima club close and maybe they could do a project on you car...you know, everyone pitch in and help you. Its a learning experience for everyone involved. If not, if you live close to Denver, bring your car by and I'll help you for fee.
