Of all things to get pulled over for, not the 20% tint not the exhaust but for a tinted license plate cover.

Near the 120/20 intersection near the Auto Zone I think I may have seen your car in the Grayson area on 84

And for the curious among us, why do you have a tinted cover over your license plate? What good does it do you?

Dude the plate adds 5 hp. Actually it accented the tint of the vehicle and keep in mind this is not a dark tint THE TINT WAS SLIGHT, as I was 10-15 feet behind the the vehicle with the officer I clearly read the plate and even the sticker that is about 1 X 2 inches. I am not complaining because I was stopped, I think a warning would have been sufficent and I cold have removed the cover on the spot

my mom was stopped for this same reason a couple months ago, but she got off with a warning. but im sure the officer would have written me a ticket if it was me driving rather than someone in their mid 40's

Yea, I have been drivng around in texas since 94 with smoked plate covers, the new one I have is actualy smoked, grey looking, and its not that dark, very slight. It helps the plate match my silver car actually, but I haven't been messed with it yet. Even clear covers are illegal here too.Originally posted by paul-e

Tinted plates are like tinted windows, the laws vary from state to state.Originally posted by paul-e

I actually had smoke plate cover in fron and in the back. And guess what???? I recieved 2 tickets for it. One I beat in Court because they not allowed to give 2 tickets for the same thing. So my advice if you are driving in NY do not put cover on your plates. Not worth it.

the reason why it is illegal to have a licence plate cover is because when a traffic camera tries to take a picture of you licence plate, all it will pick up is a glare
I have seen somewhere on the net, that there is a clear spray that can make you license plate glare when a picture is taken of it. Yet to the naked eye the plate seems normal. Has anyone heard of this?

I haven't seen this yet, but how would that work?
95emeraldgxe is dead on right for this one folks. That's exactly what the officer explained to my father as he was issuing him a $50 ticket for his tinted plate cover.

Is there any legit reason to "smoke" a license plate? Kinda like Photohopping a plate on the web. Why not just remove it altogether?Originally posted by ivolley

i got ticketed for that tinted cover once too. the officer said he was gunna do me a favor and ticket me for that rather than runnin a yellow light

I drove around Atlanta for almost 5 years with a tinted license plate cover without any problems. I moved to KY, and, within a week, was given a friendly verbal warning by a cop stopped at a gas station. From his perspective, it was an obstruction to properly view the numbers on the license plate.
Same law in Cali... The difference here is Red Light Cameras snap a picture of your FRONT plate, thats why I wont put one on... Ive never been stopped for it, or ticketed..YET?

My 99 Accord has a tinted plate cover that got me stopped in Old Bridge NJ by some ******** motorcycle cop on Route 9. He stops me as I'm pulling into a Honda dealership (carshopping). He also told me that clear plastic covers are illegal too. So because he fined me, I feel as though I fined the township back by not buying my Maxima in their municipality!! KMA Old Bridge!! As for the 'hard to photograph' thing, it's BS. I've had the back of my Accord photographed a few times in the EZ Pass toll lanes (when the scan doesn't pickup) and promptly receive notices in the mail WITH a pic of the backend of my Accord and the plate (though tinted) is VERY clear (which IS how they know to mail it to me). (Granted I'm only going about 10mph.)
