Short period of white smoke on start-up...?

A co-worker of mine bought his daughter a '96 Maxima a few weeks ago. I think he said it has about 110,000 miles on it, but the car is very clean and seems to be in great mechanical condition. However...

He told me that a few days ago, after a cold start, some white smoke came out of the car's tail pipe for a few seconds before the exhaust gases cleared up. He had not noticed the smoke before then. It wasn't bad, but it was enough to prompt him to keep his eye on it for a few days.

After a few days of observation, he noted the white smoke is only generated on a cold start; The exhaust is completely clear after a warm restart and during general daily driving.

Is this short puff of white smoke common to a cold-start, or is it symptomatic of an underlying [worrisome] mechanical condition? Please kindly share your thoughts. Thanks.

Any chance your coworker is seeing water vapor? If not, and it is white smoke, then there may be a problem. Keep an eye on the coolant level.

The white "smoke" for a short period, only on cold starts, sounds like it could be a head gasket problem. If it is bad enough, you can verify by the presence of antifreeze/bubbles in the oil by looking at the dipstick.

Thanks for the feedback, which I forwarded to my co-worker for his reference.
