Gas mileage on my roadtrip
#1
Man... it really took a nosedive for my Thanksgiving roadtrip. I usually get 27 MPG on the highway, with a high of 28. From Gaithersburg, MD to Durham, NC I got 22.5. (Each leg is 285 miles.) I was in heavy traffic and used my cruise control very little. In MD/VA I probably averaged 50 MPH with some stop and go in the first 20-25 miles. In NC I drove 80-85, since traffic was lighter. On the way back on got 23.8. This was through heavy traffic for most of the way, some cruise control, and through moderate to heavy rain. I'll see what I get in my Christmas roadtrip to New England. Hopefully it will be better. I've never done lower than 25 on the highway before, even with rain and heavy traffic. My city driving, with absolutely no highway, brings me 18 MPG.

Youve still got me beat Paul. My 5 speed seems to be particularly thristy for petrol. I usually get about 23 MPG on steady highway driving, and my overall average is a little below that. This car is alot less fuel efficient than I thought! It seems the 5 speeds get worse mileage than the autos?

I think autos and 5 speeds are pretty close in mileage. I think the 5 speed is rated higher in the city. When I drive around in the city/suburbs, I'm heavy on the accelerator. The Max is a gas hog. I'm going to experiment with my latest fillup. I'm going to drive light as possible. It will be tough!
I think if you baby it, the mileage goes way up. As soon as you drive like us, it goes south.

I dunno about the "driving styles". I admit that I do drive a bit more agressively, and I am aware that my mpg is lower because of it. However, I'm getting about 23/25 mpg in city/hwy in my auto.
I'm really disappointed in that. I was expecting closer to what the window sticker said, which I thought was like 24/28 for the auto. (I just checked the Nissan site, and I think they changed their EPA ratings since I bought mine).
What really bugs me is that my 3.8L V6 5spd Firebird was getting about 27 city and 30 hwy, even though it had a lower EPA rating. And I was driving that a LOT more agressively than the Maxima.
Even when I babied my Maxima on a 3000 mile round trip, I was only getting about 27 mpg on the hwy driving using cruise control w/in 5mph of the posted speed limits. Seems to me it should have been better than that.

I dunno about autos and 5 speeds being close in mileage. My buddy has a 97 se auto that seems to get 50 less miles per tank than mine does. I rev it to 3-4000 around town and he only goes to about 3,000 in Chicago. I get 23-26 no matter what I do. I mean I've driven 300 miles at 110 mph+ average and still get 23! You gotta realize I live in IA and at 3AM I'm the only one on the hwy.

I filled up my tank in Jersey, drove 60 miles, pure highway with cruise. Stopped and put only 1.2 gallons in. The pump stopped at .7 gal and I filled it until it spilled over the quarter panel. That works out to 50 mpg. Then I said, well what if it weren't full before? The pump stopped at 3.6 gallons, and then the dude in Jersey topped it at 4 gal. At most you could add another .2. In that case I used 1.4 gal and got 43 mpg. Totally bizarre.
I realize 60 miles is way too short to calculate, but my highway mileage had to have been way up there. I mean literally all highway, almost less than 60 seconds of the car being stopped. Only stops were at 2 toll booths.

Um, EPA numbers for 4th gen maxima is 22/27 for 5-spd, 21/28 for auto. EPA numbers for 5th gen maxima is 21-27 for 5-spd, 20/28 for auto. 24/28 sounds more like 4-cyl Accord mileage numbers.
BTW, I average 20MPG in 50/50 city/highway driving. All city, I get around 16-17MPG. All highway, around 23 MPG. Never got any higher than that. I'm not very hard on the gas either.

How many miles city and how slow/fast is that? Most of my city driving never gets above 50 and stays around 25 MPH. My commute is 8 miles each way. I go through at least 10 stoplights and through 20 stop signs. With that I get around 18 MPG. If I get on the highway some I can get around 20-21. During long trips of nothing but highway (fill up right before getting on the highway) I usually get around 26 MPG.
For 2001 Nissan lowered the EPA rating for the auto to 19/26 and the manual is raised to 22/27.
