5th rear on a 4th gen?

Ok I don't know if this has been asked before or even thought of, but I did do a search. Anyways I have $3,000 to spend and I thought it might be a good deal if I did a 5th rear conversion on my 98 Maxima. I assume $3,000 would be more than enough to do this, but I am afraid it might cost around $5,000.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Bad or good I want to hear it all.
Thanks
-Rodney

the rear of the 5th gen has this round and oval look to it that probably wont match too well on the 4th gen. while it's doable, i dont think it would look that good. besides, everyone knows the 4th gen has a better looking booty.

the 3rd gen doesn't even touch the 5th gen rear nevermind the 4th gen!

order goes like this:

1. 4th gen
2. 5th gen
3. 3rd gen

hey bill, wanna step in on this argument here please?

5th gen and 4th gen backs are ok but 3rds are just overall all around better, cleaner, and less "involved" styling

4th gen is the best by far. I still dont get why people love 3rd gen rear so much. I really dont like it.

But thats just it...3rd gen rears dont NEED any help. You see people clearing out 4th gen tails, shaving the trunk, swapping 2k2 tails on a 5th gen, painting the outlines but us 3rd genners leave the rear alone it already looks good the way it is. (Exception: Stu and the skyline tails )

I dunno...I love my rear

Although this summer I'm getting the car re-painted and getting that center reflector filled in which is gonna look even shweeter.

I gotta say I dont like the 89-91 3rd gen rears, all because of that bottom reflector piece that goes all the way around. 92-94 looks better because this part rounds off on the back.

4th Gen rears just look saggy and odd for some reason...almost like when you see cars with bad back shocks and the rear is lower. But the rear isnt actually lower, it just looks it.

5th gen rear looks okay to me...

if you have the black middle piece (the vg version) and you black out the side brake lights, it looks pretty nice on the 3rd gen,

i have also seen 4th generation bootys looking alright,

but we can all agree that the 5th generation got too much junk around the trunk, it looks okay now but will look "so 2000ish" in five years, the third generation is timeless, it looked good then and still today looks good, very few cars are timeless

4th gen rear is the worst I have seen. I have consulted many opinions over the years, when I was thinking of buying one. My GF and all her family, everyone at work, my family. And they all said the same thing it looks like a sagging rainbow. 5th gen looks tight but...I still dont know!...3rd gen all the way. I asked my neighbor when I had a meet at my house. I had a 4th and 5th gen in my driveway, and asked which he liked better, I didnt even ask about the 3rd gen, and he points to mine and says...yours...The 4th and 5th gen members didnt say a word...NO NAMES ...So you guys can call it boxy(You may be thinking of the 2nd gen) or maybe the sagging rainbow 4th. But 3rd is by far the cleanest, when will 4th and 5th gen owners wake up and realize the 3rd gen is overall a better car. Lets not talk IRS!!! I will race any Max with my 92 SE 5 speed (STOCK) when I pick it up next week.

And you know this I am very sick of 4th and 5th gen owners talking smack about 3rd gens. That is why I just bought a 92 SE 5 speed instead of a 4th or 5th gen. I am going to put an end to all the talk. They will see!!! Although, my next Max would be a 2k2 6 speed due to its extra gear and power, but, I will always have a 3rd gen! They are on of the best cars built.

I'm with thebull on this one. Someday down the road I'll get a 2k2 6-speed to park next to my 3rd Gen, neatly skipping the 4th Gen altogether! I also could've bought a 4th Gen, but didn't.

That 3rd Gen rear with that sleek roofline and solid bar of red lenses is so clean and timeless I call photos of the rear "moneyshots"!
3rd Gens RULE, true "Maximas"!

thats what id call it, a saggy rainbow...although the 97-99s arent as bad as the 95-96. The 4th gen I30s have a better rear shape

I love my maxima's a$$

The over all shape of a erd gen is so magnificant. LOL this is the first time that i have ever heard a 4th gen called a rainbow butt... And i agree that the 3rd gen body style is timeless... I love to look at the rear of a fellow 3rd gen max.. Its so well shaped, the curves flow, and its no to bubbley....Unlike other gen owners i will not talk smack about any of their max.. But I know that 3rd gen is best looking IMHO..

uh...as much as i like my car...i don't think the rear of 5th gen maximas are the strongest part of the vehicle...

especially on a 4th gen...

didnt this thread start out as a 5th to 4th rear end conversion??

anyways, everyone gots their own opinion, seems most of the 3rd gen guys think theirs is the best and so on...
I dont particularly like the 3rd gen styling but thats my opinion. 4th gen and 5th gen rear ends arent really that great either..thats why there is aftermarket..so we can make anything look better.

My favorite Maxima Tails are all SEs.

The Before '92 VG Maxima SEs are my favorite overall.
2nd would be mine, 97-99 Maxima with a cleared tail.
3rd would be the 2K-2K1 SEs in Black.
