First, all of a sudden my check engine light comes on. I was extremely worried, but the excellent people here showed me how to self diagnose.

I got one long blink and 4 fast ones. I assume this is 0104, which brings up Vehicle Speed Sensor

I call Nissan and it’s a $28 dollar part in the tranny. Only $58 if I want them to install, however talking to a knowledgably Nissan technician, he said he almost guarantees the light will stay on, and the problem is really my speedometer gauge reporting false to the sensor, which is more common then the sensor going bad.

However my speed and odometer seem to work fine. He told me to look for the needle sticking or improper mileage? Have not noticed anything yet?? Anyhow, the gauge is $300 or so or more including labor!

I have warranty that should cover this, but will the mods in my sig void it? I can only imagine them telling me my speed sensor is bad because of my Y pipe! I’d hate to take it ant the CAI off, and then back on again!

Please advise. Last, while checking the car, I also notice this Sunday:

I checked the front three spark plugs. The two to the driver side leak a little oil halfway down the socket hole?

Normal? Only 60K on the engine. Just had 60k tune up.

I think they have to prove that what you have done caused the prob. The dealer in Orlando told me that since I changed the factory tire size, I void anything that is conected to the wheels. dough drivline, trany, just about everything. Nissan is the worst Fxxxxxg company I have ever had the plesure of dealing with. My friend had his head gasket, Valve cover gasket and intake gaskets changed under war. with the damb s/c still on the car!! WTF

Get the dealer to do this:

Have them replace the vehicle speed sensor, and if that fixes the problem then good. But if it doesn't fix it, get them to refund your money for the part (not labor) since they get a perfectly good part back. Have them agree to this before they start working on your car. Then if all else fails, replace the guage cluster and see if that fixes it...but do the same deal...you get your money back for the part if that doesn't fix the problem.

Money paid for labor is nonrefundable, since they did do the work you paid them to do.

i doubt that would work

I mean, surely a speed sensor with 60k on it isn't the same as a new one right? Same with the gauge cluster. I can't see them taking the bait.

The problem with your plugs does not sound common among Maxima owners. Mine has almost 100K on it with perfectly clean plugs. If I were you, I'd either do nothing about that idiot light since you know what it probably is, change that $58 part or change the more expensive one. It won;t hurt to fix the $58 part and drive around awhile while you find the cash for the gauge. I wouldn't touch a guage since anything related to the dash is not my forte.

Thanks guys. What do you think about this: I have warranty that should cover this, but will the mods in my sig void it?

Also, any idea on the the little leak? Bad gasket? I'm almost starting to look away from Nissan and the Maxima Don't want it falling apart on me. 50K have been regular driving, and a excelent service record every 3K miles on the car.

I'm starting to rethink about Nissan. Their service is no good at all! If it wasn't for this board, whouldn't be that much fun.
