It's kinda expensive, you can buy the magnets from ebay.
search for neodymium and you can make one of your own.
I used a neodymium magnet for my drain plug (its pretty small and its also gold plated so you can see what it catches real easy), just epoxied it to the end of the drain plug. I have to say it works well, it catches really fine metal particles.

Our I.S. guys are always giving me magnets from dead hard drives.
FWIW, after using a magnet on the filter for 6 or 7 oil & filter changes, I decided to open up the filter to see if it had any effect. There was a small pinch of very fine metal particles where the magnet was.
