I personally would not use one. Just purchase a high quality filter (ie napa gold).

Why not just stick with quality oil and filter? These have been proven to reduce wear ans prolong engine life.

Although, I guess it doesn't hurt to keep coming up with new ideas

It's kinda expensive, you can buy the magnets from ebay.
search for neodymium and you can make one of your own.
I used a neodymium magnet for my drain plug (its pretty small and its also gold plated so you can see what it catches real easy), just epoxied it to the end of the drain plug. I have to say it works well, it catches really fine metal particles.

It's worth it if it only costs $1 or so. Just take any permanent magnet and stick it on your filter - works the same.

Our I.S. guys are always giving me magnets from dead hard drives.

FWIW, after using a magnet on the filter for 6 or 7 oil & filter changes, I decided to open up the filter to see if it had any effect. There was a small pinch of very fine metal particles where the magnet was.
