Has anyone directed tubing from the grille or bumper to the SI or JWT intake to increase cold air? What steps need to be taken in order not to allow any water from reaching the intake? Would this show any actual beneficial gains?

If our experiences down here in FLA are any indication, there is no discernable difference between the CAI and the underhood intake. MaxGator and myself tested the SI and the CAI intakes on otherwsie indentically equipped cars, both on the dyno and the street and found absolutely no difference. The two test cars dyno tested identically when they were unmodded and identically when both modded with a Cattman Y pipe and the 2 differing intakes. "Street testing" gave the same results as the dyno....no difference.

Thus, directing cool air to the underhood filter would most likely not show any meaningful gains.

it won't matter too much at normal speeds. The intake is situation towards the front of the engine bay, away from the exhaust manifold. At speed, fresh air is being pushed through the engine bay, so there is little increase in the intake charge from the engine bay heat.

Yep...thats what our testing seemed to indicate. Absolutely no difference between an underhood intake and a CAI. This proved me completely wrong! On previous cars, an underhood intake was disastrous on a hot engine...a definite sluggishness was there. On a 5g Max it seems to matter little to none.

luckily i wont have to direct

air towards my custom intake system, my car has tubing going from the grill to the air intake through the fender. so I will benefit from the stock parts.

Yeah, I left my stock ram air peace in so I guess that might help some.

A lot depends on the location of the exhaust manifold. For example, on the Miatas, the exhaust manifold is RIGHT next to the intake.. uh hello engineers??? what are you thinking? LOL

I've posted a few times before that there's little need to use a CAI setup over a POP setup, but everyone sides w/ the CAI.. we're the lone voices in support of the POP! hehe

I have a JWT also. Then again, that was more because I'm poor and didn't want to cut a hole in my car then anything else.

What about noise difference.

Is the CAI any quieter than the underhood(STillen/JWT)intake?

On my car, the CAI and underhood intakes are about the same in absolute loudness level. But, the CAI seemed to have a lower pitch to its growl. I like the sound of the underhood intake better.
