Any advice on a 2002?

Hi all. Just sold my 96 SE after 114K and about to get a 2002 SE. Anyone know of anything negative on the car?

I heard the Infinitis have a rotten egg smell and was wondering if the Maxima has the same problem.

Thanks for your time.

someone brought up the "smell" a few months ago. i think the answer was that sometimes new microfilters smell that way when they're brand new.

personally i havent gotten a random rotten egg smell. i have noticed a foul-ish smell after driving the car hard for more than a few minutes but its not unbareable and it goes away.

if you are planning on getting a 6-speed people complain about the feel of the shifter. this is the first manual car i have ever owned so i can't really say how it comares to my old cars but i have noticed that the 2k2 shifter is a lot notchier than my friends' cars that i have driven recently. apparently redline transmission fluid helps the notchy feel a little. i plan on trying it when i get my car back from the shop.

in my opinion there are not HUGE negatives about this car. the shifter is not a big deal at all. the one thing that bothers me the most is the gas mileage. some of us are getting really bad MPG (18 or 19) but then some people are getting 24-26 with mixed city and highway driving. the drivers (including myself) could be at fault for thr bad MPG but i dont think that is entirely the reason. ive tried to be easy and shift early and get better mileage but it doesnt happen.

however, overall - its a great car.

I've noticed the "smell" too. The new car smell hid it for the first couple of months, but it's noticeable now. I've tried different air fresheners, thorough cleaning of the interior, but it hasn't gone away. If it is the microfilter, how long does it last? Has anyone notified Nissan or found a TSB for it?

I had the smell for the first 1K miles or so and went away. It's all the parts breaking in. It will go away after a few thousand miles. The 6-speed shifts like a bucket of rocks but again "breaking in" period. I now have 4700 miles on my 2K2 and the shifting has improved alot. Anyone else want to comment? I had a 2K auto which I loved but wanted a Maj Blue 6-speed for a while and was waiting to see if there were any hickups with the 2K2's and I found very very few. If you can definately get the 6-speed.

The only negative i can find is that it can be hard as hell to lean forward at WOT

About the smell, I get it after i park somewhere too. Its outside the cabin only.. and seesm to be comming from the brakes.

how much do you think 2k2's will cost 3-4 years from now?

Depends on the options, miles, and trim level. A fully loaded SE with average to below average miles should hold it's value fairly well. Probably $16-$15,000.

Hmmm...reminds me of a "Seinfeld" episode.
Jerry tried to sell his '90 BMW , but eventually gave it away to homeless guy - who didn't want it. The smell was that bad.

Thanks for the responses. Seems that a lot of you know what I'm talking about. I'll tell you why I decided to ask the question in the first place.

I have a 99 Infiniti I30T which has what is known as the 'rotten egg smell'. Each time after driving the car hard and parking, the smell is noticeable. On long trips with the AC or heat on you may even get teh smell inside the car. It never went away and the car now has 39K miles on it.

As you know, Infiniti is made by Nissan corp and I was wondering if the Maximas have the same problem. Seems that some of you have it on the 2k2.

FWIW, the Infiniti dealer said the rotten egg smell is due to the gas being used in NYC. He said the problem isn't prevalent in California. Sounds like bull to me, especially since I tried all brands and grades of gasoline and know of I30 owners who don't get the rotten egg smell.

Hope I don't wind up with a 2k2 with the same problem. Going for my test drive tomorrow. Thinking of getting the Glacier Pearl. Wish me luck!
