but it just rubbed me the wrong way today. The noise is like a hatchback that wasn't shut or something. Didn't even have to hit a bump, just when the road isn't level. Yes, if the car hits a big bump then there are rattles all over, especially in the dash. But mine was somewhere in the right door. No matter what you do with the Bose you really can't drown it out because of the glass-like knocking noise.

Finally I just ripped the piece that runs along the windshield right out of there. Got a wire running to the vanity mirror there. The car is so cheesy underneath. The quality is just surprising, that's all. I think the rattle is gone, but I'm not positive. I'm not sure how that piece can make such a noticable noise--possibly metal clips? If someone could document a 4th gen rattle survivors guide that would be great. I'm positive the car did not sound like this when new.

******* Rattles!!!!!!!!

I have the same damn annoying rattles in the passenger side of the car. I first thought it was my door component speaker crossover moving around in there. I ripped off both fron doors and patched everything up with duct tape, extra foam and hot glue. I started my car up and just at an idle i can here something rattle. Its driving me to the point that im gonna gut the whole interior and flood the car in concrete.
Anyway i think ill try ripping off the door pilar and securing up that pesky wire in there with good old duct tape and some dynamat. When i first bought the car you could here a pin drop inside, even if i hit a pot hole goin 60mph on the Belt Parkway. Now that its lowered, has low pro tires, lots of BASS everything is all over the place. After lots of dynamat and countless hours, im down to the one spot. With the exception of the rear deck rattling with extreme LOW BASS!! that cant be helped. Anyone else having the rattling problems too??

removing the door panels....

its actually easy to do.
1) remove the light cove ron the door and the 2 screws. pop out the fixture and disconnect it
2) remove the 2 screwsat the very bottom of the door (right below the door pocket)
3) romove the switch panel (pop it up with a screw driver and disconnect the harness)
4) pop out the door cup (start with the rigth side, pry it up with a small scre driver, then work around to the left side) should make a loud POP and come off.
5) pull from the sides of the panel out tword yourself.
6) there is 4 clips around the perimeter of the door.
7) lift up and remove the panel.

OR

go to the ORG home page:
1) click on Shoptalk
2) modifications
3) interior chrome door handle (I30 acc.)
There is full picture diagrams on how to do it as well
goodluck

i had a problem with the reat window rattling against the rear windowframe/chassis. you could actually hear metal scraping against the glass rear window. anyhow, i took it to the nissan dealer several times and they took the entire rear end apart and secured any possible loose ends, and added padding where needed. the problem didn't go away, but eventually i just forgot about it and it went away on its own. i guess i got lucky.

I know this has been mentioned before, but...

On my way out of town last weekend, I stopped by The Home Depot and bought $2.00 worth of black soft foam insulation. One side of it is fairly adhesive and will stick anywhere you need it to, for how long, I don't know. In any case I put some in the crevice between the A pillar and the dash where I thought a rattle was emanating and sure enough that quieted things down a bit. Also, a piece of the insulation between the clear plasitc covering the speedo/tach cluster and the surrounding trim cut down some of the rattles. Now, I can only hear one more and I think it is coming from the passenger side seat belt area. I guess it's time to break it out again. In any case, each car will be a little different, but it can't hurt to try, it is really cheap and with the help of a credit card can be pushed into really tight places where it can't be seen and it will help calm down those rattling pieces.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

rattles are common

in the max. Mine only has 31K and jeez, there are two main rattling areas that annoy me...the driver side door panel and also the dash board where the speedo cluster is--feels like soemthing is loose and vibrating when I hit a pothole or if the surface is not smooth--has anyone had this problem also?
but aside from that it has a lot to do with the quality of the build of the car---

anyone noticed that some of the door panels have different gap differences?
rattles, gaps, etc...bad transmission--and the only thing that saves it is the personality of the car...and the engine.

wheeww.

Rattles Ack!

Yeah my 98 has 52k on it and the rattles are really starting to drive me nuts. They get most annoying during the winter months here in TX, I'm guessing because the cold makes the parts contract somewhat.

Specifically, the glove box rattles at high speed, and my favorite, the VIN plate rattles when I hit bumps! This is really annoying as there's NO way to tighten the thing down. I thought it was the driver's a pillar, until I actually held the plate down while driving (fun) and the rattle disappeared. The Nissan dealer said "Sorry can't touch it, laws and such". Argh.

I have rattles in my car too. One is a glass like rattle in dashboard near the windshield, second in the right door panel and another one somewhere behind the back seat. They are so annoying, gotta do something about them.

They can be annoying....

My 4th gen is about to hit 30K and I'm starting to get them more often. The first one I traced to the p/w switch plate on the pass door. Even the stock Bose was making it buzz. I just put my hand on it while searching and it went away. I'll likely use some foam or something under it to solve the probem.

Most recently, and coincidently, after I lowered and added 18" wheels, I get these "cracking" noises that seem to come from the A pillars and occasionally the rears too. I expect they'll be full-blown rattles b4 too long. Maybe the cold NE weather has something to do with it. Oh yeah, and for the first time, I heard my trunk lid (I think) perform a nice resonance for me over some washboard bumps.

I plan to let my friend drive the car while I "hunt" around the cabin for the source of these noises. Then, I'll find where to bang to make it happen so I can fix it in the garage.

Even with these few annoyances, the car still feels very tight and compared to most cars is rattle-free (ever own a Camaro?)

dash RATTTLLLLES

let's compare notes--by chance what type of dash board rattles are you getting? does it sound like it is coming from the inside of the dash? had it for awhile?

Mine has been a pain in the butt

Re: dash RATTTLLLLES

humaras, i'm going to check it out this weekend.
sounds like the rattle is coming from the right side
of the speedo cluster. Not sure if it's inside the
cluster or just the trim around it. Oh and it started
around june of this year. I had the car since march'98,
roughly 31,000 miles.

I have to say my father has a 93 camry and it is built
like a ****ing vault. Not a single rattle or anything.
It has about 67,000 miles on it. Still tight and solid.

And my other car is a
90 corolla, just recently it started to develop a nasty
rattle at the speedo cluster, but that's acceptable since
it has 170,500 miles. never had a rattle or noise before.
Oh well, good old Toyota quality.

I am chilling.

Yeah, your max is starting to look good.

RSB should be a good improvement. I noticed on my 2000 SE a lot.

I was thinking of getting some H&Rs springs to bring the Maxima down from the clouds . it is too dammm high.

But I don't think I will do it.
I am planning to sell it this comming summer. I got my eyes set on Lexus IS300. Yeah baby...

Laterz. Let me know if u guys planning any more meets.

I think that's helpful. I put my piece back in the A pillar but left it loose, because I wanted to confirm that's where the rattle is. Guess what? It doesn't rattle when loosely in place. So clipping in place does cause the rattle because it probably doesn't sit right and rubs other things like the dash.

If this were a bottom-line car I'd say it's nitpicking, but it's the flagship.

Do they pass the rattles down from gen to gen or wha?..

I had 4 rattles in my 3rd gen, 1 - fixed, other 2 - not yet
I got the car, everything seemed to be Okay, however I was always getting a huge sunroof rattle, that retarted sliding cover is driving me crazy, i'm gonna rip it out and tint my sunroof. I was getting a rattle in the trunk somewhere, after 3 weeks of torture and constant rattling, i was looking around the trunk and couldn't find the ****ing problem, then I checked the compartment for the Jack, it was loose The other rattle was either where the spare tire is or somewhere towards the back behind the padding, I stuffed all the possible areas with towels or old rags.. Doesn't seem to bother me for now. I now got a rattle in the front suspencion, somewhere on the right side, any uneven road and it rattles.. damn.. I guess struts or something, but I'll check it out when I have time, Good thing my BOSE stereo still works, or I would go crazy with all the noise. :|

I recently helped a co-worker pick and buy a car. We ended up with (gasp) 1995 Toyota Camry V6 XLE. Couldn't find a 4th gen Maxima. They sell really quickly and none of the dealers we went to had them.

What was funny was the Camry's center console and dash were a bit rattly and creaky even with "only" 50,000 miles. I think all cars tend to have some rattles and creaks...some more than others. My Maximas have their share.

VIN plate rattles

I jammed some toothpicks under the VIN. It seemed to help quiet the rattle. I have spent 2 years trying to quiet my rattles, nothing seems to work. I might get lucky and quiet some, but new ones always seem to surface. Definitely go to the Home Depot and stock up on different types of weatherstipping and foam. Just jam pieces in all seperations and gaps.
