5 speed conversion, how much does it cost?

I was wondering how much it would cost to convert a 96 auto into a 5 speed. I am seriously thinking about a conversion. How many have you have done it? and if so how much did it cost? also silly question but is a 6 speed possible?

Around 2200 with good parts, and of course if you do the labor yourself. try a search

I disagree. if you do the labor yourself, you could get by under 1500. Of course it depends on what the junkyards you look at have, and what they want for it. People have done it for less than 1g. Then of course you can sell that auto tranny when your done as well.

yea i have heard of a few people doing that. The situation I am in is I have a buddy in NY who owns a shop and might be buying a crashed 5 speed 97 max from an auction and will do a swap in my car but I just need to pay for parts and labor (including a new clutch). Do you know where I can get a good clutch?

2000. That is what I'm going to pay.

But this is what I came up with for me, not all new parts.

car-parts.com

Tranny = 650 used w/ warranty.

I read earlier that some guy got a VLSD w/ 7k on it for 700 shipped

Flywheel = 30-100 dollars be sure to get it resurfaced(I'm sure you've read Harolds page and his advice)

Phoung
Clutch = 380

thepartsbin.com
Clutch m/c = 50
Slave cyl = 40
Pedals = 20

Nissan
Engine mount = 110
Clutch piping and linkage = ??? What do you guys thnk? I have all the part #'s for this stuff but haven gotten off my layzie **** to get quotes

STS = 75

raxles.com

both axles = 250 (~125 ea.)

Plus I'm going to pay Mr. Cranman just shy of 5 bills for the install.

So I guess around the hood of 1500 with dec'ent parts. Sorry for the mix-up fellas, I guess I was only thinking of myself, and here in New Mexico, a dead/totaled 5spd is hard to come by.

BTW, are those Mille Miglia Actions you rolling on?

its gonna cost me 2300 due to great price on installation...here's the break down

54,000 mile trans - 700
ACT street clutch - 350
rebuilt drive shafts - 150
all other parts (brand new) - 650 shipped
installation - 400

2250 and thats wit basically all new parts and a great trans with 30,000 miles....

u can get this a lot cheaper, in fact a lot of people has but if you want everything new and full proof of everything lasting, this is the way to go....

before the y-pipe is was really quiet considering I had straight thru muffler, no cat, no resonator, than I put the y-pipe on and and it got cheesy loud, so I had to put a 26" rsonator between the muffler and the cat, and I love it now, quiet as he// and pulls nicely in the midrange, and gives a cool hiss, like just kool. Its a first generation 2.25" pipe with the equal length tubes.

I'm non-abs so its all good.

I've found a 1997 tranny for 725 shipped.

Have you found a tranny yet? VLSD?

recently i have found out i will need a new 5 speed tranny for my max. My car is now in pieces and i am not sure where to look or where to begin in buying a transmition for it. I would like one with under 55000 miles on it. JAY - that little leak i have been having is now resulting in me needing a new transmition. If any of you could please help me or point me in the right direction where to buy one it would be most appreciated. Or if anyone has one they would like to sell. PLease help! also what years would i be able to put in my 97, 97-99? also how do warrenties work on that.

you people are not including the ECU.. which is like 500$.. but your auto ECU is supposedly going to work on the 5 speed but it's going to have the check engine light on all the time.... i don't know about you guys, but i rather have the correct ECU for the peace of mind.

How about a 6 speed in a 4th gen. I am also intersted in a swap and will probably get a 5 speed but if a 6 speed is a possibility I might do that. Any major advantages to having a 6spd if at all possible...

I am looking into that also, will a 6 speed work in a 4th gen?
