Me vs. '99 Camaro SS 6-speed
Some of you remember a thread I wrote a while back about my friend and his 2000 V6 mustang 5spd being fast and would beat/hang with a good deal of you stock/lightly modded guys.. Well, that same kid just handed that mustang down to his brother and got a '99 Camaro SS 6-speed T-top! His parents are insane, he's gonna kill himself with all that power... Were gonna paint our cars calipers tommorow so i'll ask for a ride and tell you guys how fast this thing is.
After I convert to 5-speed I would be the 2nd fastest car at my school aside from a Lightning. Now, with him getting this, I am kicked into 3rd place.
He's gonna give me ALOT of crap about how he could whoop me. Now, after I get my 5-speed and STS, with all my mods, how bad is it gonna be? He's definatally gonna be a showoff and smoke the tires off the line, so i'd launch lightly and take off.
I know alot of you are just gonna flat out say i'm gonna get spanked, but street racing is alot different from the track..when this kid had his v6 stang he raced the lightning and was hanging with it's rear the whole time! I was right behind them..
So, what are the 0-60 and 1/4th times of the 1999 Camaro ss 6-speed?

Geez, 4.9 !?!? That is like world class speed. He is 17 too...
I know he won't be able to handle the power...he's definatally gonna spin and smoke, thus allowing me and my little 3 liter to skip ahead (Thats how the v6 stang held with the lightning, the SVT spun alot more off the line)
I'm interested what guys like Kloogy and Dave B. have to say about this..

Another questions is, what car do you guys think is harder to launch, the SS or my 5-speed? I know RWD is alot better for launching but with his massive torque/power don't you guys think our Minima's are alot easier to launch?
That would be soo funny if I beat him off the line...

Hey Craig I raced a few 6spd Camaros in my modded 5spd 95 max. I remember one day I lined up with one when the road was wet(this was a planed race, 0-100). I beat him off the line by a bit and managed to maintane a lead unitil 70 MPH. After that he flew by me and opend up a large lead on me. If I had a SC on my max at the time I might have been able to hold him off until about 95 mph.

Hey bro, I have driven a 2002 6spd SS, my friend has one. They arent that bad to launch, especially if it has tcs. All he would have to is rev up a bit, dump the clutch, it barks the tires and away he goes......blasting right past you!

Craig, as for your little race, my friends girlfriend has a 2002 SS, and it runs 13.0's at 110 MPH lightly modded (SLP exhaust). Even the fastest supercharged and juiced 4th gen here will have difficulty keeping pace with a stock SS. Mods are cheap and plentiful as well. Launching isnt an issue compared to your open differentialed FWD. SS with RWD with positraction and 275 wide tires and traction control... Even if he has an utterly bad bad bad launch and reacts a second behind you, the 320+ HP and 345 ft/lb torque will make correction very easy. You wont stand a chance, not even in the rain. Particularly since you're automatic. Tell him you have better resale value, reliability and interior build quailty and all the other fine traits of an import

I tell you what, I have yet to see the elusive low 13-second "stock" LS1. Not to say they're not out there. I'm simply saying most guys aren't anywhere close to low 13s in these cars stock. Most every stock LS1 at my track is in higher 13s at 102-103mph. There are some quicker ones, but they're not stock. There's even one that goes 11.8s@120mph with a little nitrous, heads, cam, and a Ford 9-bolt rear. It's quite impressive.
Anyways, this kid will most likely have severe traction problems in a 99 SS. I had a 94 Z28 with a few bolt-ons and these cars are pretty hard to launch. I'd have to say I'm more consistent with my Maxima getting 2.2s. I was able to get a few 2.0s on my Z28, but most were in the 2.2-2.3 range which is aweful. Drag radials are pretty much needed to get good ETs. I've lined up against quite a few LS1s at my track and they usually start walking me pretty hard after the 1/8 mile. When I'm doing 95-96mph, they're doing 103-106mph. We're talking about 4-6 cars or about 70-120 feet at the finish line. The LS1 is a deceptively quick car. My LT1 felt like it had a bunch more grunt in the lowend, but the LS1 just keeps going. It's topend is where it shines. The 99 LS1s seem to be the slowest LS1s and the SS/WS6 are by far the slowest of the LS1s. The SS/WS6 stiff suspension, heavy 17s, and low profile tires doesnt't help launching these cars. In the turns they're great, but in a straight line they're a bit traction limited.

i am a slow *** stock 98 auto max...and my friend who has a 99 or 00 i dont remember which stock automatic z28 beat me pretty badly..it was pretty cool though cuz i have never seen an auto car peel second gear that hard before; we stopped at about 70 or 80 and he had several car lengths on me; now i did have two friends in the car and he had no one else....but either way the result would have been the same

My 2K2 Max
60' 2.264
330' 6.314
1/8 9.667 @ 74.22mph
1000' 12.567
1/4 15.033 @ 90.58mph
This guy's SS
60' 2.435
330' 6.190
1/8 9.292 @ 79.28mph
1000' 11.938
1/4 14.174 @ 100.97mph
His off the line traction (or lack thereof) really hurt his time.
Man!! I wish I had a 6sp Max. I would have REALLY hurt this guy's feelings.

I'll be patient: I'll have my Y2K Quest SE paid off in less than 2yrs which should coincide with Infiniti's release of this version of the R35..er..G35 Coupe:
NOTE: The rear-end that any SS driver will be forced to view when attempting to race this VQ35DETT monster. (Sort of like the view I give of my 2K2 Max to Pontiac GTP drivers!)

Ok, He just took me for a ride in it and WOW. That thing is a BEAST. He said he raced a mustang GT upgraded to a Cobra and beat it pretty easily, and whooped a heavily modded 5.0
That thing pulls so hard it's scary. We spun through first and we were at like 72mph in second gear within seconds.
All I have to say is I would need a 5spd, supercharger, and good traction to compete with him!

Craig: that's a V6 Mustang? I thought only V8 Mustang GT's come with dual exhaust, unless he did a custom setup like you. I saw this guy posted some stuff for sale in the for sale forum. He said in one of his post, it's a GT.

There is a ton of work done to it, I'll try to list all the performance:
CAI
Headers
Downpipe
Straight pipes into mufflers
4 inch chrome tips
Superchip
Short throw shifter
But it is a sweet ride and i'd definatally wouldn't mind having it. It's dropped with rims, 5% tint, grille, stripes, ect...but it won't be a match for my Maxima once I get the 5spd in.

Most of the stock LS1s I've seen at the track trap between 105 and 108 mph. With those traps and the right launch and under the right conditions, they can run low 13s. I've even seen one guy run a 12.997 @ 109 in a stock 2002. They really haul ***, I've raced some and it wasn't pretty.

Keep in mind that the power seems to be "under-rated" on the Camaro LS1 SS's to help separate the car from the Corvette. They may be rated at 320 HP or whatever, but from what I've seen, that's about what they put down to the wheels!
I think you'd need an S/C and darn near every performance mod available just to "hang" with a stock SS. And then all the SS driver would need to do is slap on a couple of cheapo mods and he'd be whooping you again.

I stopped reading the thread after page 2
But I had to say this...You WILL get raped, even if he starts in second gear, stalls, restarts the car, finally gets into gear just to miss third gear..then once he gets it in third for good it's over and hes doing above your TOP SPEED before you know it.
My brother had a 2000 Firebird w/Ram Air (almost exact same car/engine)...and it was so fast it planted you in the seat like crazy, even when he wasn't pushing it hard...
3/4 throttle = you on the phone with Stillen/NOS soon for boost.
