5 Speed Transmission Help... please..

Hi All. I have a 95 SE with 165,000 miles on it.
I had the oil seal (transmission) in the driver side axle replaced already twice and it's leaking
transmission fluid again. It turns out that the
problem is inside the manual transmission. The gears inside it are loose and moving. I guess the differential/bearings are messed up. I think that's the reason why the oil seal always gets screwed up. My question is ... is there anybody
from the board who have done this kind of repairs to their Maximas? How much do you think the dealer will charge me? Can you recommend someone? dealer?

Thanks in advance!

Definitely sounds like the infamous bearings. The good news is that the bearings are cheap, the bad news is the labor is pretty intensive. Plan on a minimum of $600. Dealers will charge double that. This problem is the Achille's heel of Nissan 5 speed drivers. Honestly, I'd consider yourself lucky you got that much mileage out of it.

Yup, you're differential carrier bearings are toast. I have a really good mechanic that agreed to let me pull the tranny and just bring that to him so he could do the bearings for me. Total for labor and parts was only $315. If he pulled the tranny it would have only been about 5-600. The dealership is going to charge closer to $1,000 if not more. If you have a good mechanic I'm sure he'll be less than a dealership.

So, you don't hear the bearings? You should be hearing alot of gear whine in 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th gear as well. When my bearings we bad, you could hear me downshifting from a block away! 1st gear always has gear whine, but that mostly due to the very tall gear ratio.

No, not when shifting...shifting will feel normal. You will hear the whine/hum while the car is in gear and moving.

That's not bad. 1st gear and reverse whine all the time and it's normal b/c of the ratios.
