what kind of car jack to get

What kind of jack is the best for doing undercarriage work? I plan to do some of my own maintenance stuff but I'm not sure what kinds of stands are the safest or best or whatever.

Thanks in advance....

Re: what kind of car jack to get

Sears had a good deal on a 2 1/4 Ton floor jack with 2 jacks stand for 27 bucks. Thats all I have and I get by with it. Maybe ramps would help too.

I bought it, saw the jack frame bend (causing the wheels to camber out) as I was jacking up my car. I returned it two hours later and got my money back. Plus, it's max lift height is 14 inches...not sufficient. Do yourself a favor, spend the $100 and buy the 3 ton service jack. I'm going to do just that as well.

I have a sears jack as well, its like the 2 1/4 ton but now that I have new rims I should have gone with the bigger 3 ton one it has a higher vertical lift. My problem is if I place the jack in the middle and raise the car both my 18's will not get off the ground. I also worked on my uncles truck and the jack barely got the tire off the floor, but otherwise before with my 17's I had no problem at all.

A good jack is worth the money.

Low profile to fit under my front lip. Lifting as high as 20". It takes less amount pumps to get it up in the air.

don't waste your time on the 3.5 ton craftsman pro.

it's got a nice tall lift height, but the thing is hard a hell to pump, and takes FOREVER to jack up to a useable height.
the upside is that I can pull cars around the driveway with it once it's off the ground.

I've seen DanNY use his 3 ton (non-Professional model) with much success. I should've never bothered with the 2+1/4 ton Craftsman and that NAPA crap.

14 inches

is not that bad... pricewise, for 25 bucks, it works well. If you need more height, I've just been jacking it up to the 14, dropping it onto stands, lowering the jack and sliding a broad piece of lumber underneath and so those 2 feet up is good enough for really anything. Just an idea if you don't have 100 bucks to burn like me

I got the craftsman 3 1/4 ton the big one with the long handle, Jack kicks a@zzz you must have the little 3 ton jack to move the handle that many times, thats not a jack thats just something to get by. I paid $100 and it came with two jack stands.

I can change my oil without lifting my Max; just turn the wheel all the way to the right, put a blanky on the ground, put on a cap rally style with wrench in hand and drain away into the pan.

I'm saving up for a lift.

You gotta be kidding! Even after lifting my car with the Hydraulic jack and placing the stands underneath to support the car (adjusted at their lowest height) I barely could crawl underdneath with my crawler. I then raised the stands 2 more notches on both sides to give me comfortable elbow room.

Buy the Hydraulic jack- Mine will just about pay for itself when I do the 2nd oil change which will be on the wife's Honda. After that oil change it's all gravy baby......cha-ching!!!!

I don't crawl under the car, I just reach in while lying on the floor perpendicular to the front of the car just in front of the front right tire. My head is just under the wheel well / front bumper area. The plug and filter are within reach from there. And I've never removed the bottom shroud piece which the manual suggests you do. I just push it down slightly out of the way to get to the filter. I'm not saying that a jack is not a good thing to have, I have two of them, just that it's not required to get the drain plug and filter off and back on.

A jack is not needed at all to change your oil, everything is right there next to the wheel. But with a jack thats more comfortable. I dont use it, and correction I have the 3 ton jack not the 31/4. Is still a nice craftsman Jack. I love craftsman gear since I cant afford Snap On!
