Auto/Manual Cruising speeds: Difference In RPM's and exhaust note

Me and Chaz are definatally converting me to 5-speed. The only thing is, his auctions are once a week so only God knows when a good donor car will show up, and 10 times outta 11 it's an automatic Minima.

Anyways, I've noticed that my friends manual '95 cruises at much higher RPMs than my auto. I am really worried my deep exhaust note is gonna sound high pitched now if this is the case. First, I have a few speeds that I cruise at often that i'd like to know what RPM's you manuals are in at these speeds:

1)20mph
2)25mph
3)30mph
4)35mph
5)45mph
6)50mph
7)65mph
8)70mph

When I am cruising at 35mph, my RPMS are at like 1.4k rpms and my car sounds VERY deep when I touch the throttle. I think my friend was at like 3.2k rpms at 40mph where as i'm at like 1.7.

Any help is greatly appriciated. This also may seem like a ghey question, but with a manual tranny the exhaust sounds the same when at the same RPM's as an automatic, right?

all you have to do is drive around in 5th gear, and you will be back to your old sound

The beauty of a 5-speed is that any speed below 70 or so you can determine the RPM that you'll be crusing at. Just change gears. When you get above 70 I (and most people) wouldn't recommend crusing in anything other than 5th gear. I travel at 80mph most of the time on the highway, which is 3250ish RPM's.

That being said...I never cruise around at 1400RPM's. I like to keep the RPM's between 2500 and 3000 when crusing, because I'm closer to the powerband if I need to pick-up-and-go quickly.

Does cruising at a lower RPM save gas, out of curiosity? It seems like it would. But then again, if you're going up a big hill at 1400RPMs, the engine would have to struggle a lot, so in that case higher RPMs (downshifting) would be better?

jesh that is true when ur car is goin up a hill just downshift and u will be hapily flying up a mountain

only think that ****es me off is that the 5spd is a 3k plus at 70mph and above... we need a 6th gear! at 70 the auto guys are at in the 2ks

Yes, it does. However, I value driveability over gas mileage.

I do feel the same way. I think the manual holds higher rpm, which is good In 5th I feel it would be nice to have a 6th just to calm the engine down.

CarTest2000 Speed in Gear plots: 95 5spd

60: 2600rpm
80: 3500rpm

Well either my tach or my speedo is off since when reading off the guages I get 60 @ 2500rpm and 80 @ 3300rpm. My speedo is most likely "fast" by a few mph, like most other speedo's.

After coming from my lazy Accord V6 automatic, which has similar highway gearing to a Maxima, the higher revving 5spd gearing did take some getting used to. But I like it!

I agree with ej on the driveability aspect.

5th gear is high enough to get decent fuel mileage (I get 27 mpg straight highway driving 80+) but short enough that you don't have to downshift when traffic slows down or you need to get around some fart blocking up the left lane like you'd have to once, or even twice, with an automatic.

5th gear has so much pull that even to this day it surprises me, and it can get away with the higher revs because the VQ engine is so damned silky smooth. The 5spd turns the Max into a totally different car. You'll love it!

Oh I am definatally looking forward to my new gearbox steve!

But I have a question...say I am going down a road by my neighborhood that's 30-35mph. If I put it in 5th gear like these guys are saying, won't I stall out when I try to accelerate/brake? I mean, i'll be a BIG newbie shifter and doesn't it take mad skill to drive in 5th @ 30-35mph?

No 5spd driver would ever drive in 5th at 30-35 mph. If you get on the gas you'll just lug the engine which is bad. Drive a 5spd "like a 5spd" and not like an auto would drive itself. Auto's like to put themselves in the highest gear they can get away with all the time. But when you have a manual you now have the capability to put it in the right gear to begin with.

At 30-35 mph cruising through residential neighborhoods I'd be in 3rd gear if it's twisty/hilly, or 4th gear if I'm just cruising and it's pretty straight and flat. Not 5th, though.
