Shudder in reverse

Shudder in reverse
99 GLE, 42k
This just started happening yesterday - and is worrying me to death:
When the car is cold (in the garage in the morning, late evening) and I start it up, it runs fine. As soon as I put it in reverse, with my foot on the brake, the car starts to shudder. I'm NOT MOVING, just sitting still and the engine seems to vibrate. Not positive its the engine, but something up front is vibrating pretty badly. Once you back down the driveway and put it in drive, the shudder goes away. I can sit idle in drive at the red light and its fine. If I put it back in reverse at the light, the shuddering starts again (the check engine light came on at this point). After the car warmed up a bit, this didn't seem to happen consistently, but would still occur.
If anybody can help me with an idea on what this problem is, I would greatly appreciate it.

Might be tranny problems. Pull the codes from the ECU.

Do you have an aftermarket Y-pipe? If you do, that could be the problem. With their tight fittment, when you place the car in reverse and the engine shifts slightly, it moves the the pipe against the frame which consequently vibrates the car. That is only if you have an aftermarket Y...specifically. *cough coughCATTMANcough cough*
