what do you use your rear view mirror for?
i use it for looking at 5th Gen's
ok ok.. in all seriousness.. when my cousin (mark aka maxkilla) taught me how to drive.. he said always check your rear view mirror at least every 5 secs while driving.. and i find that alot of people on the highways don't check theirs that often..
and end up..
a) getting pulled over by a state trooper who has been behind them for 5 mins.
b) getting cut off by the person behind them ( ) and get shown the finger.
c) getting mad at the guy who zooms by them in the right lane at 100 mph.
( )
so how often do you look in your rear view mirror?

Look at how many runs I make to NYC and CT per year and I've yet to be pulled over. I'm heading to Manhattan tonight and I'll be using that method tonight as well.

I always check the rear view mirror often. Actually I check all mirrors, even the side ones very often. Mainly I check for cops, even though I have the V1 radar, I still have to keep my eyes open. So far with that strategy and the V1 radar, I have no tickets in a long time; at least 3 years I would say.

rear view mirror saved me from getting hit by a drunk. I was on Rt.57 and some guy was barreling at me at what must have been 120mph in the right lane. I was in that lane too. He put his blinker on... and attempted to move into the left... but he never did... never even budged. If i hadnt swerved into the break down lane I would not be here. Because of that day I refuse to get drunk, or drink, ever. And i always look in my rear view.

as often as i can...keeps me abreast with my surroundings. i also look in the side mirrors often. my eyes kinda do a scan, start at the driver side mirror, rollover to the rear view mirror and then over to the passenger side mirror. and i repeat this often.

hahaha when i first read this question, my immediate response was: i use the mirror to put on my makeup while driving to work!
ok in all seriousness, i check all my mirrors so often that i think i stare into them more than the actual road in front of me!

I like many of you am constantly checking the rear view mirror. Is there a better feeling than merging on the expressway and with your keen eyesight identify what could possible be a cop car nearly 3/4 of a mile back so you drive the limit and low and behold 2 minutes later it passes you. This has happened to me sooooo many times.

I'm always flashing around the rearview and side mirrors, almost enough to where I think I'm schitzo or something. Then again, I'm pretty much always watching the road or doing my cycle above, and at stoplights, always watching other traffic/lights. I can't stand how 90% of the traffic here has an AVERAGE 1.5-2 second delay from when the light turns green to when they notice it's green.
Though when I install my sub I dunno how functional the rearview will be....back to just sides only probably.

Another question that should be asked is.
how far down the road do you look?
It should be 15 seconds. In other words, you should be able to pick a landmark on the road and it should take 15 seconds before you get to it. Scanning left to right will help you see just about everything and help you avoid any issue that may be ahead (accidents, traffic and so forth).

I always check it to make sure people don't hit me when I slow down by letting off on the gas or downshifting. Some people won't stop unless they see brake lights...
Letting off the gas will slow you down people!

I scan my rear view "often enough" to keep my situational awareness at adequate levels. Every few seconds in heavy traffic, but less often when there's little traffic.
I also use it to watch slow Honda's

I check my rear view constantly when agressively driving to check for cops and so I know where every other car on the road is. If i'm just driving normal on the highway then probably once every 30 seconds depending on traffic.

i check all the tine for cops.. been saved many times by checking my surroudnings... i'm so good on the MA Pike that i can spot a statie .5 mile ahead of me... pretty good.. i almost got pulled over once cuz i was talking to my friend and not checking my surrounding... i was goin like 90 in a pack of 4 cars.. thank god the cop pulled over the ring leader!!!

mirrors
I seem to check my rearview about every 3-5 seconds. You gotta love when you see cars where the mirror is so twisted, the only thing the person could possibly see is the passenger seat...you know they don't use it too often!
Jeff, the Gumball Rally allusion was great - I loved that movie growing up! "Whatsa behinda me is notta important!!"

Re: mirrors
This is a very interesting question. My first response is that it's for chicks, but after reading the question and driving home from work (about 1 hr commute) I realized that I'm into all 3 of my mirrors all of the time. It seems that I drive w/one eye in them constantly. This is probably while I drive rather agressively, I have not been in a crash in 22 years(22 years ago I hit a curb on my 17th b-day 'cause I was buzzed) Amazing, if you keep up on your surroundings how many wrecks you can avoid. I can't begin to remember the number of times i"ve gotten out of trouble because I've "seen it coming" by the way others are driving (or more accurately doing stupid things)
Defensive driving does not mean driving like a grandma, it means driving in a manner that presupposes all of the dumb stuff everyone can do around you , and being able to do your thing in spite of it.
be carefull out there guys, we have great , powerfull machines, and we love driving them. IT's our duty to do it in a manner that puts our caution above that of the unwashed masses!!!

I can't figure out why but every time I look into my rear view mirror it keeps breaking! This is getting expensive!
I use my rear view mirror all the time. However I rarely used it when I was stopped before I started riding my motorcycle 4 years ago. Riding a motorcycle makes you keenly aware of where you are at, at all times. Sometimes as drivers we tend not to be as observant because we feel safe inside our cars.

depends on speed
I check my mirror depending on speed. when I am in 85-115 range, I check it constantly to know the positions of every car on the road. Plus the state troopers.
But I am constantly checking all mirror for state troopers
It takes almost half of my driving time especially at night when I can't see the trooper creeping up on me.

watching the loser dissappear on the horizon..
and of course watching for cops, but they usually don't even try to catch up when you cruise at 120 on the highways. more important to watch for roadblocks in front of you.
