Re: buying a car out of state

If you're buying it froma dealer, they know what to do. They should be able to get a temporary license tag so you can drive the car (you will need to get insurance first). Then you bring it to your state, get it titled in your state (new title of course, since it's a different state). They might inspect your car to check the VIN and verify that the color, etc matches the information you provided.

Pretty simple.

Oops, should have mentioned private party. It used to be as simple
as the seller signing off on the title, then the buyer goes to the
bureau of motor vehicle. Now they want both buyer and seller to be
present to transfer ownership (when they're local). I don't suppose
they can make the seller go out of state?!

Call up your local BMV / License Branch and ask them. They'll have the right advice (whether you might need any special forms, documents filled out). Sorry, don't know.

Yeah... find out what the deal is at your local DMV & Chicago DMV. You won't be able to drive it without a valid tags...(or temp)

My friend bought a 5th gen Max from within his state (NJ) & wasn't supposed to drive it home, but did anyway. (2hour trip) He used some old tags he had. He didn't get pulled over... it was close, though! I was following him in his modded 4th gen 5spd (FAST)

It was illegal, but it's hard to pay a someone (private party) for the car & not pick it up until a few days later... while in the meantime you're thinking that he's "screwing" with your ride.
