Are rotors universal, somewhat?

Its time for me to change my rotors, my front ones have deep grooves and im just going to change them since it already has 80,000 miles on them. Anyways, i was on the phone with my girlfriend i was thinking back when i had to change my lug bolts that the rotor just slides on the lug bolts. So then i thought, if its that simple, then rotors that have the same bolt pattern and similar diameters should all be interchangable right? I think there is something im missing about the rotor/caliper assembly cuz i dont think its that simple, some one let me know, thanks.

Not necessarily (in fact, in most cases... no).

The thickness of the rotor and also the offset of the rotor relative to the mounting surface are factors.
