K&N vs Monsterflow - the results

Steve, Brian C, and Place Racing have all endorsed the Monsterflow filter for various reasons. Some said +4hp, some said different.
In the neverending quest for N/A power I decided to find out for myself.

Both filters are equal as far as performance.

It's so even it could be the pulls or +/- dyno precision we see.

Thanks Kloogy for the filter!
Thanks hawks25 for dynoing with me!
Thanks APG for taking my $ and getting rid of the color dyno printer

Me too. Nice work Bejay! Your study finally proves that K&N is just as good so all of us K&N users need not switch over.

thanks for doing the work, im sure we all appriciate it.

i think that I would take the K&N over the monster flow because of a few reasons, 1. the K&N looks better 2. I trust K&N and 3. it just doesnt seem like the monster flow does that good of a job compared to the K&N.

thanks again

Thanks for taking the time and spending the money to do this. With the K&N being proven as far as filtration and quality there is now really no reason to use the Monsterflow.

I checked your car domain page and profile but couldn't find what type of intake you are using or what you used for the test. Do you have a CAI, pop style, or a hybrid style? Did you use any type of velocity stack for the K&N for this test?

Place Racing intake - the original CAI (no stacks). Intake pipe stayed a nice cool 113deg at yesterday's auto-x.

I'll beg to differ. I have a mosterflow and I've taken the whole intake apart only to find that it's clean as a whistle inside. I think the monsterflow does a damn good job.

I agree with you deezo I have taken mine apart too and same thing. When I heard about monster I waited until PR switched before I bought mine just to get it.
I think they are great and I love the look of it too.

Considering my K&N fell apart after 18 months I don't need to test em. I'll let you know next winter how it's holding up.

Yes you can. All you need is a 3" adapter that all CAI's come with so you can bolt the MF on.

I'll tell you why people use Monster Flow, it's cheaper! Don't compromise, stick with the best, and don't follow fads. Always have, always will, K&N!!!

okay, okay, calm down. It's not a bad filter, but personally I wouldn't use it in my own car.

It does not have the a 30+ year proven track record that the K&N filters do. I have never seen a Monster Flow filter on a race car. Have you? It is a well known rule of thumb that foam is a big no no when it comes to filtration. Hey, maybe the Monster Flow filters are better than K&N, but until they prove themselves over time it's a null argument. If you are using one, keep using it.

30 years ago, K&N had to be proven too and I'm sure that people that had no knowledge of it dissed it also. As far as Monsterflow's not being on race cars, I'm sure there are some out there. Marketing is a stupid devil. Just because K&N's are well known throughout motorsports doesn't mean that its the best. Look at Iomega for instance, they are a big name in the computer industry but they make trash. It's all just a name if you ask me. Mosterflow will prove themselves just like any other product. If it goes bad, I'll get the Apexi. As far as the debate goes, what is null is that people around here call somrthing bad when they don't know what they are talking about. Give it a year let's see how good Monsterflow is. I've seen a lot of reviews on it and some people even changed over from K&N and liked the Monsterflow better. We'll see.

Hmm. They're no race cars but almost everytime i read magazines such as SCC and HT i've seen several project cars use either the HKS (foam) or the MF (foam+tackifier) filter on them.

Thanks BEJAY1. As you have now conclusively proven that neither filter can claim a performance advantage over the other, it's simply a matter of which one filters better. To the best of my knowledge, the MF has never been tested for its filtration capabilities. Also, the MF uses an unknown "tackifying agent", so it's virtually impossible to compare its filtration capabilities to any other known filter.

I, for one, am not comfortable in using untested air filters. So for now at least, I'll stick to my K&N.
