Ok...this has to do with a girl here at the office who owns a 3 year old Cavalier...sorry....never the less the situation just blows me away so i thought I'd ask. She needed a new water pump as it blew up or something..the garage has charged her way over $600.00 as they claimed they had to take the engine right out of the car to replace the water pump!!!! Could this be?? if so "holy smokes!"
If not...big time scamola!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she bought it from a used car place who got the thng at an auction..no warranty.....

opinions?........................

some cavaliers have that 2.4l engine, have to take timing cover and everything off, big job, labor is like 7.0 hours, but never heard of a shop having to remove engine. but might almost be easier to do it that way.

$600 is way too much. Does it includ the part? Since she know exactly what repair she needs, pick up a phone, start calling. A good price should be around $250 for labor.

Typical price for water pump replacement is like $300. The part itself is only like $50 but the labor is fairly intensive.

Maybe the Cavalier is especially difficult to fix, so it will cost more. Either way, your friend should go get an estimate from another shop and if they are both high, then its prolly just because her car is difficult to work on.
