Random Tech Cat..upgrade to ball and socket?
#3
I believe it's me your talking about. I'm the only one here who has done this mod w/ the ball socket type flanges. One other guy has converted to fixed flanges.
The RT cat uses floating flanges. They are adjustable. But when you use the gasket and tighten them down it bows the flanges at either end. What happens is the flanges will leak in the middle. This is what I was experiencing w/ my rt cat. One guy had the rt flanges cut off and fixed flat flanges installed which are better than the RT flanges. Now I converted to ball socket type which uses NO gaskets at all and is superior to both flange types above. But I had to cut off the back end of my Cattman Y to do it. So this is probably not for everyone.
Check this link for pics. Gives a real good view of what a ball socket flanges look like

Re: Questions...
As the pics show, there are two parts to the ball socket type flanges. So to connect the Y to the inlet flange of the RT cat, you must cut off the Y flange and the inlet RT cat flange and install one ball socket set there. And then another set for the outlet of the RT to cat back connection.

if you cut the rear of your Y..then you have to weld something to it? and also what about the other end?
that site is nice....

Hi,
I'm the "other guy" who upgraded the RT cat to fixed flanges. I had it done at KOOKS custom Headers in NY when they modified my B-Pipe. The fixed flanges do not leak as the rotating ones do, and they make the entire exhaust quieter.
