i do not know how to instal this as well. I am going to sit one day and figure it out and make my own write up. But it shold not be too long after we get the cams in people do not back out(cough).....but i will help everyone out as much as i can, but remember that i do not know really how to install these as well.

 

ill get a write up if no one else does within 2 weeks, when i get mine, ill be getting mine, its actually simple, but ill get my new cam and make sure its good

Since these cameras are relatively sensitive devices when it comes to source power... do the following to prevent damage due to over-voltage...

You want to use a 12v voltage regulator. You can get this at radio shack for $1.59. Part number is 276-1771. See pic here:

The idea behind this is: a car uses 12v to power all the electronics, however it's never exactly 12.0v. If you meter the battery it will probably read around 13.5v with the car off. When the car is running it may read up to 15v or 16v. This is due to the alternator making the current and charging the battery. Most electronics in a car arent sensitive, so this 20% + threshold in voltage is not a concern. However, sensitive devices are only safe within about 10% (or less). This means that the 12v camera will probably be ok if the voltage is 10.8v to 13.2v. But that also means that if the camera sees 15v or even 16v then it could get destroyed.

Now that you understand that, here's what the regulator does: As the name indicates, it regulates the voltage to stay at 12v (with very good accuracy) as long as the input voltage is >= 12v (which it always is unless the car has electrical problems). So what you want to do is connect the voltage regulator to your power source, then connect the camera to the regulator. this will ensure that the camera gets a nice steady 12v.

Connecting the regulator couldn't be easier. There are 3 pins. See the pin connection diagram here:
Pin 1 is the input. Connect this to your +12v source in the car. Pin 3 is ground, connect this to the Body of the car or any suitable ground wire that's handy. Pin 2 is the regulated +12v output voltage. Connect your camera's +12v red wire to this. Your camera also needs a ground of course, connect this wire to pin 3 of the regulator as well.

That's it for steady supply voltage to your camera. I would also recommend using a relay to connect the camera's power depending on what you want it to turn on with. For example, mine is wired to turn on with my stereo. So i used my 12v turn-on wire going to my amps. But this wire is not suitable for supply voltage. So i used a relay that pulls power from another source. The relay therefore connects good power to the camera when i turn on my stereo/ LCD.
