Cattman GD on QUAIFE differentials for 95-01 Max 5Ms
Cattman GD on QUAIFE differentials for 95-01 Max 5Ms
Cattman Performance is very pleased to announce a group deal opportunity on the legendary Quaife Differentials for the 95-01 Maxima 5-speeds (and any 95-99 I30 5-speeds WITHOUT VLSD). This part has been unavailable for 2-3 years, but we have negotiated a special deal directly with RT Quaife Engineering, Ltd in the UK.
There is no other part that will do what the Quaife differential does for the Maxima transmission. It is an all-gear type that automatically distributes power to the axle with the most traction, or to both axles evenly if both have good traction. It also significantly reduces torque steer! Quaife offers the strongest guarantee in the industry - a lifetime warranty - and according to Quaife, they've never had a warranty claim. Quaife UK's website is http://www.quaife.co.uk. A summary of how the Quaife ATB differential works can be found here http://www.autotech.com/quaife/index2.htm.
The group deal requires a minimum of 16 orders (w/ deposits) to work. The unit price goes way up if there are fewer than that. If we can line up 24 orders my price goes down £20 and the GD price drops $40, which would be great.
Price will be determined by the size of the deal:
16-23 orders, $1189*
24+ orders, $1149*
Even though it may seem like a lot of money (and it is), this is one heck of a deal. Even though the Maxima diff is a limited production part, we've gotten the price down below the $1250/unit that they charge for the other Nissan diffs that are regularly in their catalogue. In fact, this is less than we were charging 3-4 years ago for the same part!
To place an order, a deposit of $400 is required, payable by money order only because we must give Quaife a deposit when we place the order with them. We will hold all of the MOs until we have at least 16, and then all will be cashed to cover the deposit. Cancellations can be made up to the point of sending the deposit to Quaife (we'll just return your MO), but after that there will be no deposit refunds. Of course, if we do not reach the minimum order number or we couldn't provide the product for some reason, the deposits will be returned.
Here are the directions for placing an order. Fill in the "To:" blank on the money orders this way: Cattman Performance or [your name] - that way if you cancelled or we sent them back for some reason, you can cash it yourself. Please include your name, maxima.org screen name, shipping address, phone number, and email address, and send to:

Its not required, but it might be a good idea to send the deposits by registered mail so that you'll have a record of its delivery.
Since there's quite a bit of money involved, we will need to receive the remaining funds just before its necessary to send final payment Quaife. Transit time from the UK to our office will be 4-7 days by air, then we will ship the individual units to customers. We will not wait an extended period of time to reach 24 units; once the pace of new orders tapers off (assuming we've reached 16), we'll do the deal.
Production should be complete 10-12 weeks after Quaife receives their deposit. This will be the second production run of this part so there are no development or design issues to figure out. We already know that the part works flawlessly.
Obviously there are issues of trust here, so those who aren't familiar with Cattman Performance's history and reputation in the Maxima community can ask around to make sure we're for real (and not likely to run off with the deposits).

*NOTE: these are coming from the United Kingdom so our prices are quoted in British Pounds. The prices above are based on an exchange rate of roughly $1.95/£1. The price won't change with minor exchange rate variations, but if the ratio rises over $2.00/£1 or falls under $1.90/£1, we'll need to raise or lower the price proportionately.

For those considering getting the Quaife, I would like to point out that this will probably be the last Quaife group deal for the 4th gens, IMO. Don't miss the boat, get in on this group deal!

Hmmm, I'll just note that we really hope to reach our minimum order # in less than a month. I'll keep a count on this thread so everyone knows where things stand.

I just wanted to say this is a great deal! especially with the exchange rate as high as it is! The Quaife is an excellent product, pretty much indestructable to all intents and purposes, I love mine! Thanks to Brian! You guys have got to jump on this!

This could be done for the 5-speed Altima transmissions, IF they are all the same design. [By the same design, I mean that they will all take the same differential - these Quaifes fit the Maximas with open differentials, but not the ones with VLSD.]
However, since it would be a new design, Quaife would probably require a larger minimum order, so we'd need to have 20-25 units committed with deposits.

The Quaife replaces your open differential, but yes, its designed to go with all of the regular transmission parts including axles. I recommend replacing the carrier bearings when its installed, and if I remember correctly you may sometimes need to replace the speedo gear (it breaks sometimes during the teardown), but those are all stock part #s.

Good question. Despite several people saying they're going to send funds, we have received exactly ZERO money orders so far.

And that is exactly my dilemma. Whether it's worth going BACK to the stock tranny and tossing my VLSD.

This list of deposits we've received is even shorter, as in ZERO. Despite all the positive discussion, and even assurances that checks have been sent - nothing, nada, zip, so far.
If we can't get 16 orders going for the best differential in the world at a bargain price of $1189, then there's really not much point in even bringing the topic up again. Maybe someone will do a group deal on Phantom Grips, and everyone can find out what a great product that is for $500 (followed by a new or rebuilt transmission).
Nobody (unless they're a fool) will pay cash for these and then slowly sell them off, it has to be a group deal. Act now, or forget about it.

Sorry, but the whole point is to get a payment instrument (the MO) that I can hold onto without cashing, that secures each person's order and protects us (and the other group deal participants) from falling below the minimum # of orders (if that is ever reached).
If we receive a personal check, the first thing we have to do is cash it, and then wait 2 weeks, tracking each check, to make sure the funds are there. Those funds will then be in our account, mixing with other funds, when they are meant to be set aside, and I don't like doing business that way (its the same reason we don't charge CCs on backordered parts). That's a big hassle, multiplied by the number of personal checks. Stopping at any Post Office or 7-11 to buy a MO isn't that big of a deal, and we can just let them sit until its time to do the deal, because we know that they are funded.

Money orders only, please. See preceding msg for explanation.

We've begun receiving the first Quaife differential deposits, sent via USPS Certified Mail (good idea).
I'll keep a running list in this post as orders are received (i.d.'d by screen name or "anonymous" by request):

Let's see if we can make more of these incredible differentials for the Maxima. I can't emphasize enough how much difference it makes under any traction situation:
Straightline accelleration - incredible launches from a diff that will handle all the horsepower a VQ motor can make, automatically biasing power to the axle with the most traction. Much less wheelspin, wheel hop and torque steer off the line, going from first to second grips right away, and breaking traction from second to third may be a thing of the past.
Anything with corners - anyone into autocross, open track, canyon cutting or hurtling through their favorite twisties knows how an open differential limits accelleration and control through a corner. The Quaife provides a higher confidence going into the corner and permits much earlier and effective accelleration coming out than an open diff.
Winter conditions - With a decent set of snow tires, the Quaife's traction capabilities in snow, ice or mud are pretty amazing. Next best thing to 4WD, this performance part is made for winter.

Come On People!
I'm glad to hear that the money arrived today. Hopefully more will show up soon.
I'm not going to complain about how long people are taking because I even waited longer than I had originally wanted to in getting my MO in the mail. But... we really need to get this going so that Brian and Quaife know that this is serious. Go by a pawn shop and sell that jewelry you got your girl for Valentines Day. It will be worth it when the Quaife comes... and she'll understand. Or if that seems too risky, go sell that guitar or something! It's only $400 bucks and you'll have a couple months to save up the rest!
Wasn't the preliminary list up to over 15 people? Maybe we need to advertise the new location of this thread more loudly?

Might consider linking this on other forums. Considering this is likely the last time these will ever be made, I can't see why you can't come up with 16 people to buy them.
I would like to, but I am not going to say I will, and then not do it. We will see how tax return is.
