1996 I30 - New Owner

I picked up a 96 I30 last week and it did not come with an owners manual. While I'm tracking one down, I have a couple of questions regarding the car.

What grade of gas is recommended for the 3.0 V6?

Is there anything I should be looking at doing some maintainence on anytime soon? 55K miles on the clock.

Thanks in advance for the info.

R/

Josh

I30 info:
55,000 miles
5 speed manual gearbox
cloth seats

you're so lucky you got a 5-speed!!! Anyways, you can find owners manuals on eBay all the time. Since you have just purchased your car...you probably want to change out the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs (?), oil...I'm not quite sure what else. As for gas, it recommends you use premium.

Congrats on the purchase
55k on a 96, Wow!!

I suggest you read the FAQ in this forum and the 4th gen forum. Butt loads of info in there. Use at least 91 octane, the VQ has a fairly high compression ratio which needs a higher octane gas inorder to prevent early detonation.
Do you have the previous owners repair and maintainence records? They can be usefull in knowing what has alteady been done. If you don't then try what I did. Go to your local Infiniti dealerships and see if they have any records of work being done to your car. That really only works if you bought it private party or it was a local trade in at the dealership.
As stated before, just to be sure, change the oil, plugs, air filter and such so you know your car is up to date.

Any plans of mods???

I've been checking out ebay for a manual since I bought it. No luck. They do have a 98 I30 manual that would probably work for the short run.

Thanks for the info on the gasoline. I've been running 91 just to be safe.

I will swap out air filter, plugs (and probably cap, rotor and wires), oil, etc. I've been in the 4x4 scene (still am) and am not familiar w/ what kind of plugs y'all recommend. Are there any that perform better than others?

Mods: I plan on making it breath better. Intake and exhaust is first, probably followed by wheels/tires and a factory spoiler. Oh and I have to have the windows tinted. It looks silly driving around w/ out tinted windows.

Speaking of intake, are these things on ebay any good?

Sorry for the n00bidity.

Use the stock NGK plugs, our cars work best with those, trust me. You can either use the copper or Platinum. Copper cost about $15 for all six and last 30K miles and Platinum cost about $60 for all six and last 60K miles. You do the math. The copper will give a just as good or better spark.
We don't have sprark plug wires or a distrubtor cap. We have a direct ignition system, so we use coil packs which if faulty will throw a CEL so I would not be too worried about that.

NGK coppers part # BKRE5E-11
NGK coppers Nissan part # 22401 50Y05

Since your a 5-speed I would go with just a cone filter and midpipe. CAI are better for autos which lack the lowend power. HAI are better for 5-speeds(generally speaking).

Look here at www.Frankencar.com for the midpipe. I use the apexi filter which is very good.

For exhaust, get a Y-pipe. Cat back is mainly for looks and sound on an NA car. The stock cat-back was actually designed fairly well and is not that restrictive.
Y-pipe will give you about 15hp at the wheels.

Read the FAQ in the 4th gen forum for more detailed info.

Check the FAQs in the 4th Gen forum. There, you will find a link to nissan's site where you can download a pdf version of the owner's manual
