Hey Sy,

I am looking for a black leather and wood steering wheel for a 97i30. How much? Also, will I run into problems with my airbag if I install the new steering wheel myself?

If you have black interior, I will be able to get you a set of leather/wood steering wheels your 97i30. You may need special toolz to remove your airbag. And also need to unplug the negative of your battery while install, and use your OEM airbag. DIY installation would take about 45min-1hr.

I dont think the 99 wood wheel will fit a 96-97 because the air bag shape is different. It should only fit a 98-99

What kind of special tools would I need to remove my airbag? I have back interior and I would very much like the woodgrain steering wheel, but I would rather have an airbag I know works for sure when I am done than have a nice looking steering wheel with my teeth marks on it from a potential accident. Basically, I want to make sure the airbag will work when I am done with it. How much will it cost?

The only important tool you need is the T50 tamper proof Torx bit. You'll need that to get the airbag off. Otherwise, you'll just need a socket wrench and make sure you eat your Wheaties. I had to pull the wheel off my old Pathfinder, and it was on there nice and tight. Some say you can use a steering wheel puller, but I say just yank on it.

Is the airbag enclosed in a small box or something once you remove it? Also, do you see any potential problem of removing my OEM steering wheel / airbag and replacing it with a wood grain steering wheel from SY, without an already installed airbag? Basically, I will have to use my present airbag in the new steering wheel and I don't know what to expect when doing the transfer, much less electronically with airbag sensors and such. Just trying to plot this install out.

P.S. I have a 97 i30t (black interior)

Thanks Man.

I've replaced steering wheels on my old Pathfinder and my old 3rd Gen. It's not rocket science. Take the two tamper Torx bolts off, and the airbag pops out. Get the 19mm nut off and then pull the wheel.

To be honest, I don't know about potential problems. The only one I would be worried about is the fact that SY gets the wheels from Asia and they might not be identical with the US spec wheels. But, SY says that he's put them on before and had no problems, so I don't know. I trust him though.

If everything fits structurally and no warning lights (airbag caution) shows up on the dash after the new steering wheel is installed, then my only worry would be if the airbag would work properly if ever needed. Is there anyway to test this besides the obvious (crashing)? Maybe the airbag not showing a problem after the install is enough reassurance.

SY, How much will the wood grain / black leather steering wheel cost for a 97 i30?
