air temp sensor in air box

I know this question has been asked before, but I can't do a search. So, on my old 97 max there was no ( I believe it is an air temp sensor) inside of the stock air box. In my 96 i30 there is one. I am curious if the car will run normal w/out this sensor plugged in, and if it needs to be in how can I set up an HA Intake. Did they totally get rid of that design after 96? Thanks for the help.

don't disconnect it, just fix it somewhere near the filter. I have mine connected to a bolt near my FSTB bolts. There have been arguments about the sensor, if it contributes to the ECU adjustment of air/fuel mixture or not. I tend to believe it does not do much.
