2K I30 HID's

Unfortunately my 2000 I30 doesn't have the factory HID's. I have a few questions about my options so I would appreciate any experiences/opinions you may have.

Has anyone replaced their halogen lamps with the factory HID? I would like to know how difficult and expensive it would be. Should I just buy a retrofit?

The things I don't like about retrofits:

The color is not the same as factory. The kit I used on my other car was 9000K (to try and get the color of factory HID), I would probably go with 6500K to get less purple.

You cant just leave your lights on which I like to do. You need to start the engine before you turn the HID retrofit on because they need full power or you may damage the ballast.

I like the black headlamp housing that the factory HID's have. When looking at the headlight, the front of the housing dosent seem to be attached to the reflector. Do you think I would be able to replace just the front part of the housing wothout replacing the entire headlamp?

Well, if you understood any of my rambling I would appreciate some feedback.

Thanks

i thought that it didnt matter but i might be wrong. i did talk to a guy selling an hid kit used in the bmws and he said that it depends on the harness so i figured that since the i30 and the maxima are almost the same. they might have the same harness. ill try to look into it more. if you find anything out let me know.

I dont think the Maxima headlight will bolt up to our cars. The hood and bumper are different and I would be VERY surprised if they did fit.

I am looking for a kit from an I30. I need to ask the dealer how much for all the components, but I am afraid of what the answer might be$

Another question for anyone with the factory HID. Is the ballast bolted onto the headlamp, as in all one piece? I think the G35s are.

What you A33 guys are going to need are the HID headlight assemblies from either the I30t or the I35. They turn up on eBay every now and then, pretty cheap too.

As for the HID bulbs and ballasts - you can use any automotive HID ballast and any D2R bulb. The real key here for a good retrofit will be getting the headlight assemblies.

A good alternative would be doing something like an HID projector retrofit in your halogen assemblies. Since you already have high beam reflectors, it becomes real easy (don't need to mess around with bi-xenon projectors or driving lights, etc.). The only thing here is that it can get expensive - especially if you're not doing the work yourself.

If you want someone to do the retrofit for you, I highly recommend http://www.illusion-lighting.com/
Take a glance through their gallery and all, it's impressive work.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I have done a HID retrofit before, so I understand what is needed. What i really have a question on is if the wiring upto the ballasts are the same on the HID models as on the hallogen models. I understand that most ballasts use the 9006 harnes (which we already have).

The reason Im rambling on about the wiring is that I want to be able to leave my lights on (so when I start the engine the lights come on automaticaly) and not damage the ballasts by starving them for current.

Any thoughts?

I've often wondered if automakers use the same wiring on cars that have HID as an option on their halogen equipped cars. I would assume so, for cost reasons, but I don't know. Perhaps you could call up a parts dept. and ask them to look up if the wiring is different or not?

Alternatively, and I'm sure you already know this, you could use an auxillary wiring harness and not have to worry about the current draw.

I just spoke with the parts dpt. at my local Dealer.

$700!!! For the I35 Headlights, EACH!!! WTF is that. I have seen them advertised on some site for under $200. On that same site they say OEM MSRP is like $350. I dont want to buy them from the site because Im not sure I trust their product.

Does anyone out there know if this is BS?

Mike I30: I need to E-mail your friend. Have you heard anything from him?

I asked the parts guy if that was just the headlight w/o the HID ballast and Bulb and he said it was just the headlight. Does your friend know if that is true? If that price, 7-8 hundred, did include the ballast and bulb that seems to me about correct.

$350ish- Headlight
$200ish- Ballast
$100ish- Bulb

hey guys. for all u who are lookin to add HID to your rides there's the CATZ hid kit which looks real good on the I30/I35 and it's cheaper than the stock package. i had the links to it saved but seems i've deleted them so i'll get them back and post em up here. i work at an infiniti dealership so if any of u need the OEM hid kit i can get u that but u'll pay lot more for it. i'll be in touch

you've seen the "I35 OEM headlights" advertised for under $200??? i'd like to see that website cause they definately are not OEM. probably some cheap imitation that won't even fit right. dealership price for a set of the I35 HID lights is $895/set. i work at a dealership and i get all parts at cost, and i'd end up paying $700 even for the set. if you want the good stuff though i would highly not recommend buying the I35 lights at some third world country website you probably saw them in.

hey mike, i did not say the lights run about $700 each. the OEM I35 HID kit i said costs me $700 for the set but it sells at a dealership for around $875-900. it's for the HID SET though, just to clarify that. there's no way they can be 700 each. there's other kits out there u can use that will be cheaper just make sure u don't buy crap

I30LeNny,

I have seen aftermarket kits out there that will give you the hi-lo function, but I have heard they are crap. I put an HID kit on my other car and lost the hi-lo, but you really dont miss it that much. The HIDs are Sooo Much brighter.

Arian,

Sorry, but did I understand you correctly:

This $800-$900 includes the headlamp housing AND the HID ballast and bulb?

When you said set, that did not mean for both sides ie. two headlamps and ballasts and all?

Thanks for the info. It is really helpful.

It looks like an older kit with the integrated ignitor/bulb. I dont think it will fit in our headlights though. You would need a HID headlamp.

**************************************

Sorry, my supplier has just informed me that they no longer carry HID
kits. They stopped because they can get fined because HIDs are illegal
on California Highways now.

If you need any other parts, let me know.

HID Kits have always been illegal, but I think just recently it became illegal to sell the kits in the states.

I have actually been looking at www.hid-online.com. They supposedly use only Philips components which is what most OE manufacturers use. I am in the process of asking questions, and if everything goes well I will purchase and tell you what I think.
