I think my fuel mileage sucks. I get around 220 miles to the tank. But most of my driving is in the city.

What is your average mileage per tank.

Your in luck! I have just been checking this out myself. I have a half tank now and have gone 160 miles, so I estimate about 320 miles to a tank (wow Im smart). I dont have the mileage yet but will post it when I fill up next.

BTW I do a pretty good mix of city and highway driving because you have to use the highway if you are traveling more that 3 miles in California.

 

I got 25-26 mpg on my last road trip, this way with 3 people fully loaded down with luggage. I don't keep track on a regular basis because I drive kinda fast and it's all city driving so I know it can't be good.

 

I get 23-24 MPG around town. Which is a lot better than I was expecting.

 

I got 27mpg with the car fully loaded with 5 people and crap in the boot, heh. Also with 400km of mountain driving which involved alot of slowing down and speeding up on steep inclines and sharp corners.

Surprisngly, doing straight highway driving on my next tank, I went down to 25mpg. Only reason I can think is the different petrol companies I used, first was a tank of 98 at Mobil, second was a tank of 96 at Shell...

 

well, since lately it's mostly city driving I get around 300-315 per tank. Once I get to open her up on the highway that'll go (with a mix city/highway) to about 360-400. Road trips at 75mph around 500+

 

I'm still playing the gasoline limbo 'how-low-can-you-go' game and usually end up using 18 gallons out of the 18.5 gallon tank. And with those 18 gallons, I get about 390 miles where 80% is highway.

 

**** my mileage sux compared to you guys. I am going to go check out my car this weekend, see if i can replace a filter here, a filter there.

 

I can get 415 miles then it begins to suck fumes from the tank. 400 is typical ...and if I've been stomping it a lot, 360. I drive 45 miles each day to work and 20 of it is at 70MPH, the rest is 35MPH.

I keep 93 in it and it definately prefers Citgo gas for some reason though I think it's all the same stuff as anyone else... silly a$$ car!

Just under 100K miles, no mods, Mobil synthetic

Give a look to the airfilter, tire pressure and check the weight of the last oil change. Those added up "might" cause some economy issues. But I doubt that bad ...even combined.

I've had experience with an older Maxima ('85) that had a bad mass airflow sensor and it cut my fuel mileage in half. I sold it before fixing it so I never found out if the dealership was right or not.

Barely 300 miles to the tank. I thought my mileage was bad because my 96 GXE gets 360...

 

I get about 360 miles until the low fuel light comes on, commuting at highway speeds 35 miles each way, plus about 10-20 miles more in city driving each day.

 

Follow-up post: I took a road trip this weekend, made sure to reset the miles and began with a full tank. Mostly highway driving at 70 and 80. The trip was at 397 and the low fuel light still had not come on when I got to work this morning.

 

I have a 98 I30. Last week, I drove it all on highway and got abt 370 miles for 17 gallons, which is good I guess. But, in city driving, it ran 110 miles for half tank, which is pretty bad I guess.

Any suggestions on improving the mileage? I don't want to use those fuel system cleaners at all! The air filter looks new.

Does it has anything to do with the gas brand? The highway ride was on BP gas while the city driving one is on Speedway gas (chicago area).

I have a 2000 i30, which is what, I think a 15.375 gallon tank? I get about 280-300 miles to the tank on average. I should note that I have 18" rims with ultra low pro tires, custom intake (much much larger than that crappy breather box), cat back 2.25" exhaust with a nice magnaflow dual tip muffler (sounds much better than the old one)...so my mileage isnt great, but it isn't that bad either...and for the mods to the car, it looks and sounds, not to mentions drives much much better..so im satisfied

 

Oh, and I wish I could get that high of octane gas around here...at least without going to the airport =)

 

I got a 99 limited and got 16.9 mpg last time. I recently changed the spark plugs, which had never been changed after 82k miles. So hopefully it'll reach the 20 mark.

 

Can we change spark plugs on our own? Or do we have to goto the mechanic? Thanks.

 

The Front bank seems easy enough to change, but the rear looks like it would be a B!tch to change out. I imagine you would have to take off the intake manifold to gain access to the rear bank.

 

Interesting. My totalled 1st gen 99 I30 was averaged about 24 mpg with my replacement 2nd gen 01 I30 is getting about 22 mpg.

By the way both cars have an 18.5 gallon tank and changing the spark plugs on both isn't difficult. Replacing the fronts is straight-forward and so are the rears if you just loosen a few screws to help move some hoses out of the way and use the right extensions and tools. Should take no longer than 25 minutes, but
changing the spark plugs on a 90 M30. . . Now that takes half a day!

 

On a 3000 mile trip my 99 I30's best was 30mpg and the worst was 27mpg. Don't know what it gets around town. But it is alot better than our Seville which I have never measured because I don't want to know.

I use overdrive on the hiway , but not running around town. It shifts into overdrive at to low rpm , lugging the engine. These little engines want to spin a little faster to keep the torque up .

 

Just got 250 mtt on my last fill up, ... sad, i changed my plugs myself, the front is easy, the rear takes a little more work... Just unscrew and move the throttle hoses, and sorta monkey them out and then back in, its pretty simple...but yea, it make a horse of a difference on my car

 

I got approximately 320 miles for the last fill on a 80:20 City:Highway driving. I guess I should feel happy that it's giving little over 16 mpg :-)

 

I got about 20.5 mpg the first two times i filled up, and 22.5 the last time. Probably becasue I'm getting more used to it now. Hopefully it'll go up a little more now that i'm even more used to it. I drive L.A traffic most of the time, maybe 1/3 of my driving is good highway, the rest is streets or bad highway (less than 30mph). Just changed my oil and air filter. Gonna change the plugs and fuel filter next weekend. I hopefully can get like 25 mpg eventually.

 

highest I ever hit was 29 mpg ALL highway. I average about 20-22 mpg 80% city 20% highway. I know i need a new air filter and my knock sensor is probably bad b/c it's running weak.

Woo hoo, from 16.9 to 20.5!!! There were 3 factors, I stopped using AC, I used Shell gas instead of Costco (unlikely factor though), and I changed the spark plugs (most likely factor)

 

Did u replace plugs because of the # of miles that you have put with the previous ones or is it because you noticed that your mileage is comparitively less?

My old plugs were really dirty, and single tipped. I replaced them with Bosch Platinum +4, which look pretty and have 4 tips. And to lawrence, I only use Shell Premium now, with the occasional 76 Premium if I must, and I did notice significant differences in mileage/performance with the different gases, I would reccommend Shell 100%. For flthere, I just decided to change them because Pep Boys had the plugs really cheap, and it sounded like a sound investment heh

 

you know, the gas really does make a difference. it shouldnt but for some reason it does. Shell seems to do really well. better than exxon or costco, and the one near me is the cheapest gas around too =)

 

First time, I filled in at Citgo (plus grade) and the car was calm and smooth, gave good mileage (abt 25~26 on highway mostly). Then I put BP (plus grade), I can hear slight increase in knocking and the mileage dipped to abt 17 (mostly city). Then I had to fill in at Speedway (plus) that gave abt the same mileage of 16~17 mpg, and noticed increased knocking and I decided I'll never go there again. This time I tried BP again and I can still hear some knocking.

I'll either go for Shell or again to Citgo next time and will put premium gas and see how it responds.

 

I have a '96 I30 with almost 170k miles on it. I get 23 to 25 mpg all the time. I have Autolite platinum plugs in it that I got at Walmart for about $1.50 each. I didn't want to spend the $11 each for the NGKs. I did the same thing to my '00 Altima and the mileage went from 23-24mpg to 21. I replaced the Autolites with NGKs and the mileage went back up. I should put them in this car, but am too cheap. It will take a lot of gas to make up the price difference. The cheapest place I found the plugs is at www.courtestyparts.com

 

you dont' have to use the platinum plugs. Use NGK coppers, they are the same plug only copper which will give a better spark. The only difference is the coppers last 30K and the plats 60K. They can be picked up at the dealer for $2 each. I think the # is BKR5E-11 or BRK5E-11. That is the smartest, chepest, and best performing way to go.

 

I'm feeling pretty bad abt my car's gas mileage. This time I had BP Plus grade gas in it, and half tank (as the indicator showed) gave abt 125 miles total city driving ... stop n go rides. :-(

 

I just didn't want to think abt mileage however less it is, but I can help it. It's barely giving 15~16 mpg on total city driving. Is there something that I should do? Please help. I am filling in premium gas. I am afraid summer is coming and it warrants me to use AC which will instantly reduce the mileage to much lower. I only drove 2000 miles after buying it, and so don't know if it needs new sparks or sthg. Also, I tried to check the air filter but I had hard time opening it and I gave up!

start with a basic tune up. change oil and filters. check plugs, sensors, valves that may be stuck. i've been keeping track of mine for about a month and a half now and low of 20.5 (mostly city or stop and go) and high of 23.3 (about 70/30 city/highway)

 

thx salgue .... I just had the oil change and they showed me the air filter which is in pretty bad condition, probably that's what was eating into the mileage ... I just started a thread on what air filter to buy, and I'll be getting one as soon as I get a good suggestion. I'll have to get the plugs checked now.
