best place to put a cold air intake?

????? The basic design that is available for our cars only goes one place.....the wheel well. I guess if you wanted to do custom work you could put the filter anywhere you wanted.

You will probably want to put it on the intake manifold. JK.
I have just seen the type that go in the fender (wheel well) and another that just sort of goes down to the bottom of the engine bay.
I personally would go for the fender because the instal should look cleaner and your filter wont be sitting next to the exhaust pipes ie: colder air.

If you look at the fender from the out side (behind the wheel), you will see black plastic. With the CAIs that go into the fender, the filter sits between the sheet metal and the plastic. It is a pretty well protected area where the filter will get nice cool air from outside the engine bay, but wont be exposed to the harsh elements, such as rocks, dirt and rain.

The best way would be to make a ram air scoop in the hood, make a box with open top in wich the open air filter takes place, and make sure the scoop in the hood is exactly above the filter. with a rubber ring you make sure the box gets closed by the hood and the scoop litteraly rams cold air into the box. and because for the rest the box is closed no warm air will enter. Also the length of the intake pipe isn't changed so it wont loose power in the high rpm band.
However, it aint the most good looking mod on a maxima I think, on my 1st gen MX6 GT (E-spec) it looked amazing! But the maxima is a whole different car. If it's about looks I would say te wheel well. If it's about performance, make a RAM scoop

Cold be that you get a few drops of water in your engine but that aint such a bad thing, it would be so minimal that it would actually gain you a bit power cause it cools your engine. Every heard of the water injection that some Impreza's use?

you could drill a few holes in the bottom of the airfilter box, that would leave thrue the rain. And a few drops won't destroy your engine. Then what would happen if you blow your head gasket and coolant comes in the engine?
The only thing that could happen is you get some white smoke from your exhaust. If it rains and you drive 70mph the rain would be rammed to the back of the box and drip down, cause of the speed, it will not enter your airfilter. You should however make holes in the bottom of that air filterbox because else it would flood with water and your air filter would stand in a sort of aquarium.
You could consider making a sort of umbrella-plate above the filter so rain doesn't fall on the filter, make it half round so it takes place right over the filter, giving it enough clearance on the sides to get the fresh air stuffed arround the plate.
