SES Light came on...Help! ('01 I30)

I just purchased my wife a 2001 I30 with 45,000 miles. We've had the car for about 3 weeks and the SES light came on. She was driving it to work on the interstate when it came on.

Went to AutoZone to diagnose and it was P0420 (Two-Way Catalyst System, Bank 1). I told them to reset it and the light hasn't come back on, but what is it...and what are the possible fixes if any?

Also, how can I find out if the vehicle is still under factory warranty? Thanks!

Does this apply even though I cannot find any paperwork? I have the owner's manual and all necessary paperwork, but cannot find anything regarding warranty info...

I had the same exact problem.........After about 3 weeks of owning the car......Brought it to the dealership and they tried to burn me (stating I need a 900 pre cat). Menawhile on the phone they told me all I needed was my ECU updated. After about an hour of arguing they agreed and updated my ECU. about 20K miles later all is well!

That's what they told me, but my car is under warranty. The only thing they said was the SES light "had" to be on for them to fix it...is that true?

I have the same problem. I just purchased an alldata subscription for my 2000 I30 and turned out it's a TSB (ITB00-0054). It says:

----
APPLIED VEHICLES: 2000-2001 I30 (CA33)
APPLIED VIN: Vehicles built before JNKCA31A*1T009745
APPLIED DATE: Vehicles built before July 30, 2000
----

According to the TSB, there can be two causes for the incident: ECM program misdiagnosis or damaged cat. Either way ECM reprogramming must be performed first. It looks like the procedure has to be followed precisely as described in the TSB and stored MIL code of P0420 has to be the starting point in order for an Infiniti dealer to claim it as a part of warranty repair.

I'm going to take my car to the local Infiniti dealer to fix it. The fuel mileage of my I30 hasn't been particularly good and I am hoping that this repair or reprogramming will result in better fuel mileage.

In the meantime if you (or anyone who's interested) PM me and leave your e-mail address I can send a copy of the entire text of that particular TSB.
