Need Brighter High-Beams

Hey guys!! just picked up a 2002 I35... love the 255HP!! Does anyone have suggestions for replacing the stock High-beam bulbs?? The Low-beam Xenons are cool but high-beams are a little yellow.

I was thinking about Piaa Xtreme Whites. Any help would be appreciated.

Just realize that you don't want brighter high beams - you just want them to be a different color. Because any bulb you put in there with colored/coated/painted/tinted glass (i.e. Piaa Xtreme Whites) are going to put out LESS light than any stock clear bulb.

Since high beams are used more to aid in visibility rather than looks...I'd think carefully before swapping to a "blue bulb."

Thanks for the advice. You're right, I don't want them to be brighter as much as I would like them to be less "yellow" compared to the low-beam Xenons.

If I wanted to switch to something more "clear", what would be the best?

Silverstar's offer possibly the best compromise when it comes to light output and color temperature. You might also want to look into PIAA Superwhites, though I don't think they make them anymore, and they're still pretty yellow.

If you're looking for brighter, try to find some Philips Hi-Visibility or Sylvania Xtravision. Philips Hi-Visibility, I have only seen at K-mart.

I'm considering getting a 9005 and H3 HID kit (yeah its $600...spewwwW) @ 6500 or 8000k. Those should match nicely when I swap for 6500/8000k D2Rs in the low beams. Anyone have luck with the H3 hid kit? I read on hidforum, and with pictures, that H3 hid doesnt work at all because the filament is lateral on H3 halogens, and the light output is longitudinal on HIDS, giving tons of garbage instead of visible light. Need form and function...any ideas?

also on top of that the fog lights are very close to the ground so if u get the HID kit wet in a puddle say good bye to your $600 i was considering that but then decided not to.

How do you figure? I would mount the ballasts way off the ground anyways, and the housings themselves are water-tight, so that wouldn't be much of a problem. They give you a generous amount of wire for mounting the ballast far off.

Guy(s)? I only see one person doing the verbal assault. Kinda ironic considering his name.

Replacement high beams - Razo and PIAA

I've tried several of them, but the ones I like the best (and despite the fact that they have a blue tint to them), the RAZO (#BG506) 9005 (or "HB3") bulbs seem to work best: no less distance on long two-lane roads and bright bright bright! They match the stock HID low beams pretty well, although the color temp is a little high. Frankly, I tried PIAA bulbs (and the company I buy from offers "Japan PIAA" bulbs, now - though not when I bought mine - but I just didn't like the lower range/distance. Curious, because I prefered the PIAA bulbs for the fog lamp replacements)

www.imotorgear.com (go to "Lighting" / "Bulbs" / "Headlights" / etc) sells all of them. I'm pretty certain that the Japan PIAA bulbs are not street legal in the US, but - hey - to each their own! They carry Polarg and Raybrig (nice, but $$$) as well as LiTech (arggh!) as well.

The fog lamp bulbs are almost all 55 watt bulbs and you dealer will likely tell you the stock 35 watt harness won't carry them, but they're BS'ing you. I've had 55 watt fog lamps since day one - and I've got more than 45K miles (and 30 months) on my '02 I35...

Thanks for the info. The Razo's look pretty good. What do u mean the color temp is a little high? It seems to be in the same range as others. Also, is it a pain in the *** to change the fog light bulbs?

How hard is it to replace the fog light bulbs

(sorry - out of the loop for almost a week!)

Well, I had my tire guy replace them. (Note: don't let your dealer do it even if they will - they will claim it voids your warranty and charge you too much $$$!) I would have to say from other sources I've seen here that once you get past the clips you have it made.

When I said "high", only because for a purist HID is 4150 or thereabouts. These are 4500 (and some of them rate higher - like 5000). Typical halogen is around 3600, so that's why you see them "yellow" compared to your HID lamps. Some of the PIAA "Japan" models rate even higher - like 6500? I'm pretty sure that wouldn't look right, either...

If I have misstated anything, I'm sure someone will chime in!
