What is going on with my TEMP gauge?

Hey,

I have a 03 i35 i live in LA and this past week has been HOTTTTT
over 100... but my dumb car says its 124 as I drive i see the temp rising.. it hits like 132 and then it just shows --- F i turn on the AC and nothing happens.... the temp is still high.

I was wondering WHICH part of the car is it taking the temp from? It better be the engine bay because its not 120deg inside the car...

Thanks

it does give outside temperature and the sensor is in the dashboard just under the windshield on the opposite side from the light sensor which controls the auto headlights....if im not mistaken.

How does it measure the outside temp. if the sensor is inside the car? Mine seems to be pretty accurate most of the time.

And it HAS been damn hot in SoCal.

Yes exactly.... how could it take the temp outside when the sensor is inside the car?

The temp today said 97 but the news said it was in the 80s... ok lets say someone was wrong.... damn forcasters but when I had my ac on... on AUTO I had the temp on 70 but the TEMP on the cluster would not change... I think it actually went up 1 degree....
Damn nissan... my car does not have warranty either... since it has a salvage title...

im not sure how it works...i just thought i remembered reading it in the manual somewhere...my outside temp gauge is pretty accurate, its usually about 5 degrees higher than official weather report's temperature though...i will try to get more info on it unless somebody on here knows already.

Ambient Temperature

The button says AMB. That probably means Ambient Temperature.

Ambient Temperature by definition means temperature "around" something.

So the temperature of the air may be 70 but the temperature around your car will be much higher; especially during the day.

It'll be more accurate at night as mine is because the sun heat isnt bouncing off the car.

And that little sensor in the dash is a sunlight sensor. Mine is probably broken because it rattles in there.

My temp sensor seems to be very accurate. The only time it is off is when the car has been sitting in the hot sun for a long time, but that is to be expected.

Just so there is no confusion, The AMB button DOES measure the OUTSIDE air temp. If your's seems high just drive around for a couple of minutes and I bet it will come down to the correct temp.

I think the sensor on the dash is not for measuring the amb temp. It is used to support the "Auto" air-conditioning. I maybe wrong, but ya, my car does show a +5 degrees more when cold but as I drive along, it shows the temp almost accurately (match those those temp readings on boards outside banks etc., are nearly accurate).
