Wheel spacers

Well I finally got sick of how far the rear wheels are inset, so I ordered a set of 15mm H&R spacers.

The install seems pretty straight forward, but I was just wondering if any of you have done this before.

I have heard that when I remove the rear calipers they will compress. Is this correct? Do I just turn the piston to reset it?

Any other helpful tips for the instal, or am I going to have to find out the hard way?

I don't think you need to remove the caliper. I am guessing your replacing the studs, but you should be able to get to one at a time by having the rotor in a certin spot. At least that is how it is on the the 95-99 I30's.

well you have to remove the caliper so you can take the rotor off but I dont recall having to compress the pistons back in for the rears.

But you should be able to do it without removing the rotor.

I got them in the mail last night, and all I can say is that it is a shame that these have to go behind the wheel. They are... Beautiful! HeHe

Anyway I hope it doesnt take too long because I have to pick up my sister in LA tonight. I dont think it will take too long, but I am usually wrong about these things

Mike, Ill try it first w/o removing the caliper, but dont the spacers have to go behind the rotor? Well, here I go spouting off before I have even looked at the situation.

Hope to let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Yea I guess so if you hammer the studs out but I used a ball joint clamp tool to press them out.

Newlove- the spacers go over the roter, between the wheel and rotor and if you have hub centric rings, they go over the spacers so its like: rotor-spacer-hub ring- wheel

That is probably a better way since you don't have to put that stress of hammering on the hub.

Well I bought a 30mm hub bolt socket (think it may be a little too big, anybody know?), to use with my 1/2in breaker bar, and DAMN!!! That sucker is on there!

Maybe I will get some pipe to put over the breaker bar to give me some more leverage.

Any tips???

why are you removing your hub nut? all you do to remove the rotor is unbolt the caliper off the knuckle and the rotor will slide right off the studs. if its stuck, wack it a few times with a rubber mallet to break the rust loose.

Well, because Im not just trying to remove the rotor.

I need to remove the hub because I need to replace the studs for my thicker spacers.

You do not need to remove the the hub to do this job. Trust me, I have remove all my studs from one axel before. The studs can just be hammerd or pressed out of the hub. The rotor does not even have to be removed either, but if your going to do all of them then I guess I would remove the caliper and rotor for easier access.

Do not remove the axel nut!

Sorry, I just dont really feel comfortable banging real hard on the hub. So am i correct in assuming that you didnt fuc-up the hub or bearing?

Now Ill just have to get the dust plate out of the way. I hope that wont give me too much trouble, or I may have to cut the thing off

A couple strong wacks is all it takes. What size spacer did you go with and who did you get it from? Is it hub centric?

I got the 15mm H&R, hub centric spacers. It seems like a really nice kit. The spacers are very light and come with the required longer studs.

I got them from www.optauto.com or something for under $100

Ill put some pics up on my site when I get done.

I have been meaning to get spacers as well. I don't know if I should go with 5mm front and 15mm rear or 15mm front and 20mm rear. I wish H&R made 10mm spacers for us. I can't stand my offset since going back to stock wheels.

I think carnal c30 bought two 5mm spacers and slapped them together to make 10mm, of course you will need to buy even longer studs to acommodate the extra spacer.

The H&Rs fit together very well, so it would probably work pretty well to stack 2 5mm spacers. That would suck to have to buy two kits though, and still have to find new studs.
