Replacing the trunk carpet
Replacing the trunk carpet
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share a recent project that I did that turned out great! The carpet in my 96 I30 trunk was not that bad, but it did have some dirt and stains on it and it was almost 9 years old, so I decided to replace it with fresh, new carpet. It was the easiest thing I have ever done and only cost about $20 and took about an hour or less.
I bought some grey carpet (to match the interior) from the auto store, a can of spray adhesive which is used for carpet and such in cars, trucks and vans, and a pack of carpet/floor matt velcro squares (4 pairs in a pack).
1) I took out the old carpet which is attached to the padding and took it inside.
2) I then layed the new carpet upside down on the floor and layed the old carpet over top of it. Then I outlined the carpet with a marker.
3) I then lifted up the the old carpet and cut around the trace line that I just drew on the new carpet. (I actually cut about an inch farther out from the line to give me extra carpet on each edge)
4) Then I took the old and new carpets outside, sprayed the old carpet on the top side with the spray adhesive (not the padding side). Then sprayed the back side of the new carpet.
5) Very carefully place the new carpet on top of the old carpet and apply pressure from the middle of the carpet outward until the new carpet lays perfectly flat. (if you have a buddy hold one end of the new carpet and you on the other end, it will be easier to lay over top of the old carpet)
It will dry rather quickly so after about an hour of drying, it is ready to go into your trunk!
6) Once it was dry, I attached a velcro square to the bottom of the padding on each side closest to the back of the trunk (the back of the velcro squares are 3M sticky). I then placed the other velcro square on the floor of the trunk. This way the carpet stays in place if you have heavy things in the trunk like your speaker box or tools or whatever.
There, you now have a brand new carpet, that is extra thick and looks great! The other thing I noticed about the new carpet is that it is much softer than the old factory one which almost looks like it is made from the same material that the walls in the trunk are made of.
By leaving an extra inch on each side of the new carpet, it allows me to completely cover the trunk floor where as the factory carpet seemed to "just fit" and would slide around a little.
Hope you enjoyed my experience. I know it is just a trunk carpet, but it looks and smells great!
Have a great day!

LOL Max Mutes: I don't have any pics yet, but I can take some tomorrow if you want to see them. I will email them to you. I know it is just the trunk carpet, but damn, it came out looking like a brand new trunk straign from the dealer!
Thanks for the thumbs up!

Thanks for the thumbs up!
The color match is almost perfect! I say almost because the original carpet that is in the trunk matches the walls in the trunk and it almost seams to be made from the same material. Thi original is not all gray. It has some black and other colors mixed in with it.
BUT, the carpet I bought from the Auto Zone is completely gray and in my opinion, looks like it could have come right from the factory. I think it turned out great and I am more pleased with it then I ever thought I could be over a damn trunk carpet! LOL
I will take pictures of the final product and if anyone wants to see the pics, just email me and I will email you back with pics.
Thanks again everyone!
