I want to install XM/Sirius on my '04 I35
Where is the Satellite wiring harness at in my trunk? Where (and how) did people mount the Antenna (roof, trunk, inside rear deck, etc)? Is there anything else I need to know? I'm thinking of buying it from Grubbs and installing it myself...

I have the XM Radio in my car and had it installed, but I can tell you my antenna is installed on the roof and the XM receiver (not the head unit) is installed in the trunk up on the ceiling. I purchased an aftermarket XM ready headunit . Did that help?
I am not sure if you have an Xm ready unit that came with the car or what, but if you have an aftermarket unit, then you will have to run the wireing harness from your headunit to the trunk where the XM Receiver is.

My I35 is Bose equipped, and so is satellite radio ready.
The wiring harness should already be in my trunk. I'm just wondering about the specifics of installing the OEM receiver unit in my trunk (and also the various options I have in mounting my antenna).

Oh I see. Well I think you can mount the OEM Receiver anywhere in the trunk. Mine is on the ceiling to the left of the trunk (if you are standing behind the car looking in the trunk)
AS for mounting your antenna, I think it depends on which one you buy. When I got XM, there were two antennas available. one was for mounting on the roof or trunk and the other was for mounting on the window. I wanted the window mounting one since I am big into detailing and didn't want to have to worry about waxing around the antenna, but they guy told me that they do not work as well as the room mounted one because there is not an actual connection between the one on the inside of the window and the one on the outside of the window. I have had no problems with my roof mounted one.
As for where your harness is located in the trunk, I am not sure, but I would guess it may be to the left of the trunk and behind the trunk wall liner near the side back of the trunk. I am saying that because when professionals run wires for XM radio or an amp, they usually like to run the wires along the drivers side I believe.
I hope this helped? Sorry I don't know the exact location.
PS. I LOVE THE XM!!!! GREAT BUY!!!!!

JF - I'm assuming your I35 was one of the newer ones that had pre-wired XM, right?
If I knew I'd tell you, but I got mine right before they started integrating Sat radio into the OEM setup. I'd call and ask Grubbs themselves - they usually know pretty well about what they're selling.

Thanks...good idea about calling Grubbs
Yeah mine's prewired for it. My Infiniti dealer quoted me a price of $650 to have it installed. WOW... the MSRP/Invoice cost on it would have been only $400/$350. I can't believe they want that much. Hell, I'm much better buy it at Grubbs and installing it myself. The only semi-tricky thing I see about installing it, it installing the antenna. I don't want to induce any water leaks into my trunk. It still seems like it's an hour job at the most though...

And if all else fails...go with a glass mount antenna. They may not get as good reception, but I can't imagine it being all that bad. I've even heard of people placing roof mount antennas on their rear deck behind the back seats inside the car and still getting good reception.

If you want my help installing the antenna, just let me know and what I can do is take pics of the way they wired my antenna for you. It looks very simple and I think it may help you with yours to see some pics of how they ran the wire so there are no leaks. Let me know.

Hey Dr.Monkey1313
Can you send me pics of how they ran the wire for the antenna. I really want to see how and where they ran it out of the car... Was the antenna screwed on or taped on? How much was the job? I'm getting my receiver next week which is Sirius ready and want to it setup, but want to do it myself if I can. My only concern is how the wiring comes out of the car and how much parts would cost. How much did it cost you to have it done? and cost of parts?
Email: msg4bob@hotmail.com
Thanks!

Sure, I can send you some pics. It will be tomorrow evening though. I think that they used 3m tape to mount the antenna on the roof, i would have had a major problem if they were drilling and screwing into my car. lol Basically, they ran the wire from the roof into the molding around the window, down into the weather stripping around the trunk and then into the trunk. It looks very simple, so no worries. I will take some pics for you after work tomorrow and email them to you.
As far as how much the antenna cost, I think it was about $79 but this was over 2 years ago, so i think the prices have gone down since then. I purchased an aftermarket radio and went with the Alpine, Am/Fm/CD/XM radio with CD changer controlls so it was about $350 to $400 back then. The XM Receiver (in the trunk) was around $150 I think and the install may have been about $150???? I had the XM Receiver and antenna installed about a year after I got the headunit. So that $150 install was just for the XM Receiver and antenna. Did all that make sense? lol
I think you should be able to install all of this yourself with no problem. It is basically running mounting the XM receiver to the roof in the trunk, running the antenna wire up through the weatherstripping and window moulding to the roof, and then sticking the antenna on the roof. Not hard. Especially since you already have the Xm ready radio in the car and the wire is already run to the trunk. I personally think that is the most time consuming part of the job and it sounds like you don't have to worry about that.
Hope all that helped give you an idea of what you possibly need to do? If you have any specific questions, please email or post here and ask tonight or tomorrow and I will make sure to find out the answers for you after work and take pictures.
Have a good night.
