That is just shifty mechanic practice.... Although if they are in really bad condition he might not want the liability, but I doubt they are that bad.

Just by rebuilt axles from Napa for $75 an axle, and install them yourself, it is really easy (dirty though). If you have a mechanic do it you will be looking at about $400-$500.

It is not necessary to replace the axel to do the struts, but I think it makes sense to take care of maintenance items first so I would get them taken care of. It's not the easiest job in the world, but since your paying to have the coilovers installed I doubt your gonna take on the axels.

No, I would replace them. Not just the boot but the whole axel. If the boot is really that torn up and the grease has all gotten out then replace the whole axel. I am just saying that the fact that they need to be replaced has nothing to do with installing the coilovers, they don't have much to do with each other.

ahh...yeah,,he just said that the grease and crap will get all over the new coilovers and may cause problems...so,, i guess ill have to wait for my drop.. and do the proper thing...get the broke **** fixed first....thanks for your help...would you say the axle replacement job is much harder than replacing rotors and brake pads? and btw, the only reason im hesitant to take on the coilover job is the spring compressor part....

Replacing the axle can be kind of a PITA. The large 36mm hug nut has to be removed and that can be a chore in its self. It kind depends of if that nut has been removed since the car was built and if it has how hard it was torqued back down. Then getting the axel to come out of the differential can be hard sometims. The first time I removed mine it took literally hours to get it out. The second time it came out easy but took forever to get it back in. I would say it is a 6 difficulty on a scale of 1-10. Srings and struts would be a 4.
