smell of gas from heater

Recently whenever I get in my car and turn the heater on, an aroma of gas arises. It started a few weeks ago. At first, it was barely noticeable but it has progressed to the point where I am almost coughing. Does anybody know what could be wrong with my heater? I need to get this fixed before I: die due to gas poisoning, or my car explodes when a spark is present. Any helpful responses are much appreciated.

I have a 93 maxima that does this. The problem is cracked, leaky fuel lines in the engine compartment. When the car is sitting and warming up, the fumes get blown into the car thru the vent intakes when the heater is on.

It has 136000 miles. Is there any way I can test the fuel lines? I am losing a lot of gas due to this. I am down to about half a tank of gas and I've driven less than 100 miles so far.

I would turn the key to on. Then check in the engine compartment for leaks. It has a high pressure fuel pump, so if there is a leak, you should be able to trace it...especially if you are loosing fuel that quick.

(Don't smoke while you are tracing)

It probably rubber fuel lines that are leaking. Make sure you replace them with the high pressure type.

I had a mechanic check it out and he couldn't find a leak. Would you guys advise me in just changing all the fuel lines? How costly/difficult would that be?

On the max it is easy and accessable. Just buy high pressure 5/16 rubber fuel line from the autoparts store and replace all the rubber fuel line you can find. It won't cost much if you do it yourself. You should double check the size though.

My max is a 3rd gen, I am not sure about your 4th gen.
