painting my brakes.
painting my brakes.
i have a quick question...my friend told me that if i were to paint my brake calipers they would break in one way or another...he said since the paint is temperated proof the heat would stay inside the caliper therefore breaking it...i dont really think this is true but yeah...just to be sure...any guys in here with painted brakes???
also....are there any girls that drive fixed i30s??jw.

Just when you paint your calipers, if you know how to bleed brakes i would take your brakes off completely and clean them really well, and then tape up parts on your caliper that shouldnt get paint on them. If you dont know how to bleed brakes, you should take your brake off the mounting post, then slide your rotor out, and tape up your brake while you have it off, but still connected to the hydrolic hose. Then after you tape up your brake put it back onto the car and put plastic in your wheel well and spray away.
I didnt do anywhere near that much work. I just taped it off, cleaned the calipers, and painted them.
They came out really well and I even put decals on. I ve had this done for quite some time and they are still perfect.
BTW I used the G-2 kit (I think thats what its called)

Most high-temp paints meant for calipers and engine parts are ceramic based, they'll still radiate enough heat to stay within safety specs for the parts, nothing should crack or break unless the part was defective. Either your friend is a 'know-it-all' and is b/s'ing you, or he's an idiot and tried to paint a caliper with good ol' Krylon or something. Another alternative if you're really worried about heat (but it's expensive) is powdercoating. As for if any girls drived fixed i30's, Depending on what you mean by fixed, I know one, but she's got a girlfriend already.
OT, but... Your female friend has a girlfriend? This could be interesting
I really cant see any kind of paint ruining calipers (as long as you dont gum up any moving parts). The thing I would be most worried about is the paint becoming stressed and cracking, and that wouldnt really f*ck anything up... It'd just be a PITA to re-paint.
Here are some pics if you like.

You can see from the pictures what kind of job can be done with the brakes still on. I actually removed them first and put them back on to paint them because you can still do a good job and it is so much easier. It is a brush on paint kit so you have a lot of control over where the paint goes.
And no, you dont get any brushmarks.

I used the G-2 kit too. It was very easy to apply with the brush included in the kit. I did take my calipers off, but I didn't disconnect them from the brake lines. I just used a wire coat hanger to hang them from the springs and then propped them off the rotor with pieces of cut 2x4. I was able to apply the paint all the way to the back sides of the calipers and mounting brackets. For those who are worried about paint causing problems, I think it's safe to say that a thin coat of paint doesn't have the insulating qualities it would take to contain enough heat to damage anything.
By the way, if you want the G-2 kit, look at www.eastwood.com. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and there are lots of colors from which to choose. Just type "caliper paint" in the search window and it'll take you straight there.
