Worst pedal placement of any car!

Time for me to complain again about the poor placement of the pedals. I ran a thread last time about how the accelerator pedal is too far to the right and is partially obscured by the center console. I also complained about the height of the pseudo-pedal for the driver's left foot.

Now, it's time to diss the brake pedal. The brake pedal is at least 3" higher than the accelerator pedal. They made "Heel-and-toe" driving hard enough by having the accelerator pedal too far to the right...but did they have to place it so low in relation to the brake?

I am beginning to dislke driving my I30 because of it!

Wow... I have to disagree... I never have any issues with that. I'm always comfortable with them. Infact, of the 3 cars I have had for significant amounts of time, I like these the best.

The I30 has a well placed gas and brake pedal. On the other hand i feel that the clutch is a bit too close to the brake pedal. Sometimes when using wide shoes or boots I press the clutch and accidentally press the brake a little.

^^^^ When I used to drive my friend's car all the time, I got into the habit of takin my left shoe/Timb off when I sat down...but I uno if you'd be able to do it. I did that cuz none of my shoes are actually tied TIGHT to my feet so it wasn't a big hassle. Right off, right on...or is it Left off, left on...

I have to agree about the dead pedal on the left. Come on...a luxury performance sedan and all we get is a cheap little piece of vinyl for a foot rest spot? My Volv. 850 had an ideal setup with a block of hard rubber perfectly sized. I wonder if it's worth bolting in a more substantial item there...

I don't ever have no problems hittin the gas and the brake, never happened once with or without a shoe or even boot on. You must have a Size 11 Sideways foot or suttin lol.

Actually, it's not length, but width that's important!

Right ladies??

See...I wear size 11 4E shoes, and maybe that's why the pedal placement is a problem for me.

That...and finding shoes to fit.

Only thing is, it was never a problem in my 3rd Gen. Max.

I have made a minor mod since I posted my beef. I loosened the bolts to the driver's seat and angled it more to the right. I also moved the seat way back.

That seemed to help, but now my right foot is a bit too far from the gas pedal, and I am still having to angle it going from brake to gas.

This week, I am going to have the pedal arm bent up and to the left. I am also going to lower the hump below the dead pedal.

If you want to see what I consider to be the right amount of room and pedal placement in an Infiniti, go drive a G35. :-)

LoL. Actually, it's all 3. Length, Width and Motion.

I have a Size 11 foot also and my feet are flat so my foot ends up being wider than it really should be. I never heard of 4E or any type of width sizes, but I fit into Size 11 Jordans which are the snuggest/tightest 11's on the market for basketball/casual shoes.

Never drove a 3rd Gen. but once again I have no complaints with the 4th Gen.

Well anyway, goodluck with trying to create more space down there and I guess next time, just get a G35.

Tomorrow is the day. I'll post some before/after picswhen it isdone (along with my driving impressions).

Actually, the dead pedal is not so big of a deal anymore, but the accelerator pedal still needs to be raised. Hopefully, all will go well.

Sounds like the guy in this thread has a solution for your pedal placement.

I agree that the gas pedal is too far to the right, and its relationship to the other pedals is off, or maybe it's the seat position that is off. Regardless, the ergonomics of the whole seat/pedals set-up is not quite right.

I've also got a Mercedes Benz, '85 300TD, and it has no cruise control. The pedal set-up is perfect - I can drive that car for 9 hours straight, and suffer no ill-effects. In the '96 I30, on the other hand, if I don't use the cruise control on long trips, my right knee will start to really ache due to the pedal position.

Why would you move them closer to each other?

I moved only the accelerator pedal: to the left and upwards to where it is now more accessible. Recall that the problem I had was that the accelerator pedal was originally too low, too far to the right, and partially obscured by the center console.

In its former position, I had to tilt my foot to the right to reach it.

For comparison purposes, check out the pedal placement in the next generation I30's -- they made them a lot easier to reach.

30ds,
That's what I'm talkin' bout! Nice job!

Is that dead pedal from the Z bolted through to the metal or just secured to the carpet. I like the brake pedal too. Did it bolt right on?

What was your source?

Unfortunately on this car, Nissan is even cheaper in this area than meets the eye. There is only about a baseball sized "ring" of metal under the carpet and rubber. It cannot be used to secure the pedal.

So this is drilled into to carpet and into the rubber in all five screw locations using 1.5 inch screws that are of the same head and threading of the orignal screws that it comes with.

The end result is actually very strudy, but if the screws do eventually "tear" out of the rubber or become really loose, then I will cut a piece of metal and drill some holes in it and put it behind the rubber for ultimate reinforcement.

The Z dead pedal is only about $15 so this is a really cheap mod to do and it looks 10x better than that sh!tty wild *****'s dead pedal that some of the maxima guys use.

The matching brake pedal and gas pedal are from the 2001 Anniversary Edition Maxima. All you have to do is pull the old rubber pedal cover off and strech the new ones over and you are done.

The end result is top notch. Here is a source site that you can use. The car is a 5th gen, but everything is the same for a 4th gen Maxima/ 1st gen I30.

I would have to disagree with your "worst pedal placement of any car" statement. I believe the title goes to the stick shift pontiac fiero. You actually have to drive with your legs tilted slightly to the right because of the substantial wheelwell protrusion. Oh yeah, don't even attempt to drive the car with size 13 Timberlands unless you what to s**t your pants while you tailgate the car in front of you!

Good thing the I30 was ranked #1 for interior space otherwise us sasquatches/sasquati (whats the plural form for sasquatch?? ) would have to forage throught the wilderness by foot.

http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/compa...8/page024.html

Too bad it ranked 7th overall.

That was a 2001 Entry Level Luxury Sport Sedans Comparison Test. I like the leg room in the 2000-2001 I30's.

My wheels are vintage 1998, and while hip and shoulder room are very wide, it's foot room that is a bit narrow, and the only area that failed crash tests (i.e., led to many foot injuries).

Compared to other cars, though, the width is not that bad.

For instance, I test drove a Scion Tc that had a lot less room than my I30.
