leaking fuel from fuel gauge sender assmbly

My '96 I30, 145k miles, is leaking fuel. Whenever the tank is filled about 3/4, it will drip gasoline from the top of the fuel tank, where the connections and assembly are for the fuel gauge sender and the fuel pump.

I've replaced the rubber o-ring, but the leak remains. I strongly suspect that the plastic assembly is cracked and leaking.

Has anyone else had a leak in this area?

I consider the situation to be very dangerous, and I'm going to call the local stealership to see if there is a TSB or factory recall or anything. Their parts department says that the new piece is about $140.

When I fill it all the way to 3/4 tank, it doesn't leak that I can see. When it's filled, there will be a steady drip of highly flammable and explosive gasoline! So I've been keeping it less than 3/4 full, but that's no way to live.

I ordered the replacement part (fuel gauge sender assembly) last week; should be here today or tomorrow, cost is ~120 from the dealer.
